Immediately after celebrating the birth of the Holy Child, Cebu prepares yet for another grand celebration, still in honor of the Holy Child. And while organizers, contingents and the city prepared for the Sinulog festivities, Cebuanos found another excuse to extend the frivolities of the previous month.
As the streets reinforced its colors, the invigorating Sinulog beat fueled everyone’s mood to party. Events, parties, concerts and fiestas seemed endless for the next 31 days. Early on Sinulog week, this writer prowled the streets of Fuente Osmeña and Mango Avenue to catch a glimpse of what the city has to offer before the Sunday grand parade! And as always, it was the human traffic congestion that one had to contend with as tourists and local denizens continually flocked to the city center for an early celebration.
That weekend, Cebu City’s party scene was already in full swing. Thursday evening, all roads led to the Waterfront Cebu Pacific Grand Ballroom to witness the lovely Sian Maynard bested 11 other ladies to be the city’s newest queen. Ayala Center Cebu kicked off the Sinulog with their Pahugyaw sa Sayaw. Now on its fifth year, the mini-parade brought in more colorful and dazzling performances. And beginning Friday night, premiere hotspots, Vudu Lounge, Formo and Paseo commenced their three-night shindig! Award-winning DJs flew in from the Capital to provide intoxicating house music.
And who said all the revelry was concentrated in the city? With the month dedicated to the Santo Niño, even the smallest baranggay in the province celebrated His feast. I was lucky to witness the festivities of my hometown Liloan and the Municipality of Carmen on the last Sunday of the month.
The Sinulog turn-out was overwhelming and the party scene was just as electrifying. All in all, it was the January that we all hoped for and perhaps even more! Now, aren’t you just looking forward to next year?
