In W endell''s World

Glamourous sequined gowns, kohl eyes, lacquered lips, big hair and even bigger jewelry are de rigueur. For designer cum stylist Wendell Quisido, minimalism should be banished to the fashion netherworld. "I was told that austerity is the operative word of the season," he said with a laugh, "and of course, I choose to view the world in gold-colored glasses!"

This is Wendell Quisido''s hallmark: irreverence juxtaposed with the fantabulous! His love for the glitzy lifestyle dates back to his early childhood days where Dallas and Dynasty were the objects of fascination for every housewife (and growing artist) from Cebu to Peru. It was those boob-tube offerings that awakened this designer''s penchant for mixing luxurious fabrics. Another source of inspiration is embellishment. Something that Wendell is refining for years. Picture an ecru serpentine gown with a chiffon bolero. Swarovski beads and crystals fight for space as each square inch of fabric has detailed patterns. Even his menswear offered silk taffeta suits and sharkskin jackets.

And why this predilection for luxurious dressing? "I''m sick and tired of looking at austere styles. Most of our people are below the poverty line and so I said, enough of these depressing sights. In my clothes, one is offered a chance to dream!" quipped Wendell Quisido with a tone of finality. Bravissimo, Wendell Quisido!
