USC Campus Lions Club: Service as a shared experience

- Nathalie Tomada -
Since the USC Campus Lions Club’s chartering in 2003, it is the first-ever and only existing campus Lions Club in Cebu City. The club is composed of young Carolinian professionals and students who are carrying out a variety of projects that have benefited the local community.

Because of an impressive track record in terms of undertaking service-oriented projects—from a feeding program, house-building through Gawad Kalinga, environment-conscious events, scholarships, to other education-related projects, the Club was recognized as the Most Outstanding Club by the Lions District Governor was last year.

Past club president Derek Go, on the other hand, has been awarded the prestigious Club President Excellence Award by the Lions Clubs International itself—a rare honor, indeed, considering that he was the only awardee from Cebu. Go was also named Most Outstanding President by the District Governor during his term in 2006. Present club president Sheryl Antoinette Go was named Most Outstanding Secretary also by the District Governor last year.

To give credit where credit is due, the USC Lions Club also handed out the following awards to members: Ferdinand Yap and Derek Go (100% Attendance Award); Cheryl Lim Go (Special Award for Citizenship); Sheryl Antoinette Go (Secretary Club Officer Award medal); Ivy Eleanor Uy (Treasurer Club Officer Award medal); Ilene Emily Uy (Chairperson Award medal) and certificates of appreciation to Christopher Yap, Tanya Yap, Ferdinand Yap, Tiffany Limchua, Jose Marie Gochangco and Ruselle Jorbina.

Devin Go who was the club’s founder and Certified Guiding Lion—meaning he assisted USC Lions club in its first two years of operation—was accorded the highest recognition from the USC Lions Club—the Medal of Merit Award. Devin, incidentally the twin brother of Derek, is an active member of the International Association of Lions Clubs.

According to Derek Go, "We are proud of our club’s more than three years of service to the community. The Lions Club members thank everyone who has had contributed to our work and truly helped us in trying to make a difference and impact in our community."

He added, "It is very rewarding to be able to meet, in our way, the needs of our community. Although I feel grateful to be presented with the awards, it has always been a group effort that’s why we’ve been successful in our activities."
