Consolacion's Sarok Festival
February 24, 2007 | 12:00am
The Municipality of Consolacion, Cebu, celebrated its Founding Anniversary last February 14. Its major highlight included the annual Sarok Festival, a street dance festival showing the many creative designs of the sarok, a conical hat with a wide brim made from bamboo strips and banana leaves, an indigenous hat common to the place and widely produced for livelihood by the upper barangays.
This no-basic-beat-no-basic-steps free-interpretation competition was joined by contingents coming from public elementary and high schools of the Municipality where Tugbungan Elementary School and Pulpogan National High School won in their categories, respectively. But the jingle is so catchy, one can easily create dance steps out of it. The music is reminiscent of the Tostado festival of Santander.
Gracing the event were performers from UC, Mantawi Festival dancers and the Caballo de Compostela Dance Troupe, who gave distinct performances of their respective festivals.
This is Consolacion's ninth Sarok festival celebration.
Dali na atong saulugon! Long live Sarok Festival.
