Visibility of Globe's High Speed Downlink Packet Access

Yuppies continue to mill and buzz in and out of Globe Customer Service Centers at the Ayala Center Cebu and SM City-Cebu, eversince last week during the Sinulog festivity, eager, to experience Super 3G-powered streaming and downloads on 3G/HSDPA capable cellphones.

With only a few quick and easy steps, the techies are already able to bring in music and TV programs with them anywhere they want to go right on the screen of their phones.

To satisfy queries, Globe Telecom conducted a demonstration on latest available technology that would make access to the Internet 25 times faster, through the Globe Mobile Broadband 3G with High Speed Downlink Packet Access, in an informal dinner at the Alavar's Cebu along Salinas Drive, Lahug, Cebu City last January 18.

HSDPA is also known as the Super 3G or 3.5G technology that boosts the functionality of 3G by allowing faster data transfer speeds and Internet browsing. Globe is very proud to have become the very first telecommunications company, not only in the Asia-Pacific region and among less than 20 in the world, to have launched both 3G and HSDPA/3.5G capabilities to customers.

"But why extend Visibility to more mainstream consumers now when executives had it since early 2006?," this was asked. Blums Pineda, Vice President of the Business Planning and Strategy and Head of the Globe Mobile Broadband 3G + Super 3G of Globe Telecom said that "originally 3G service with HSDPA was launched last March 30, 2005 with GPRS, Wi-Fi and dial-up through its corporate services arm GlobeSolutions. Globe created the universal access service called Visibility service in March of 2006, as the company became the first in the Asia-Pacific to offer a universal Internet access service with 3G/HSDPA technology."

The relaunch of Visibility in March 2006 with 3G/HSDPA technology served well as the litmus test, responding to the urgent and growing data needs of subscribers (i.e. relevant content for mainstream users, offers for migrant population) at relevant and thoughtful price points.

In a press statement it was learned that thousands of Globe subscribers are actively using the technology since the launch of 3G with HSDPA in early 2006. After close observation and evident successful uptake of visibility, but more importantly the wider availability of competitively priced and easier to use HSDPA access devices, momentum was created to spur an extension of the service to mainstream consumers, not currently covered by the selection requirements of GlobeSolutions clientele, explains Pineda.

So how was the response to Globe's HSDPA-powered mobile internet service? Globe, in said press statement, said that Visibility is open to anyone with the need for truly mobile internet broadband connectivity - ultrafast, wire-free and unlimited - whether corporate, entrepreneur or consumer.

The thousands of current users of Globe's HSDPA across various sectors have reported that the technology gives them an edge - the freedom to choose and get online anywhere there is 3G coverage - broadband speeds with full mobility.

It was also stated that Globe has received positive indications with regards to inquiries and actual purchases. For those that have bought/tried the product, reactions have been highly positive, as well. Further noticed are the encouraging blog threads regarding Globe Visibility and how it is addressing a sweet spot consumer need for mobile broadband access. Mac-users, PC desktop users, Windows OS laptop users can all enjoy wire-free access to the world of the web through Visibility.

Pineda mentioned that Globe has heard stories, for example, of how subscribers are reaping productivity gains through HSDPA by turning their cars into mobile offices such as one subscriber using his Visibility while on the road en route to a meeting three hours away from Manila - they get a head-start on their working day, with access to the information that they need, en route to the office or to their next appointment.

To create awareness on High Speed Downlink Packet Access, demos on available technology were conducted not only at the two malls mentioned but also during the Kabalikat Fiesta at the Capitol grounds, and during parties at Loft Lounge at the IT Park in Lahug, Tequila Joe's and Tonic; and other business centers in the city from January 19 to 21.
