Glimpses of Operation Smile Medical Mission Cebu

"He was not the light, but came to introduce the light." (John 1:8)
God indeed sends instruments to extend His presence.
How fortunate I am to have been one of the selected volunteers for Operation Smile 2005 sponsored in Cebu by the Mariquita Salimbangon Yeung Charitable Foundation, Inc. That gave me one of the most memorable experiences in my life, an experience I shall always cherish.
When I reached the Vicente Sotto Memorial Hospital where the medical mission was held in February 2005, I can't help but feel the pain of the children lined up to wait for surgery. They all had that look of hope - you know, hope for a change in their young lives.
My school, the Colegio de la Imaculada Concepcion, adopted a ward, something that we had been doing since Year 2000. Our task was to decorate the Ward, make it as cheerful and colorful as we can. We also helped the nurses in easing the pain of the children by reading and telling them stories. We enjoyed working with the other student volunteers from Sacred Heart School for Girls and Sacred Heat School-Jesuits.
After surgery, we saw the children again, this time - with smiles - smiles that came from their hearts! Seeing them happy also made me happy and grateful to God for making it possible to bring Operation Smile to Cebu. Also, I am grateful to the Almighty for shaping me and making me an instrument of His awesome love.
So - once again, I am a Volunteer! For Operation Smile 2006! - Jacklyn Gocotano
Operation Smile Medical Mission really touches my heart! I volunteered last year and I consider that an opportunity of a lifetime. It was an experience that made me realize how blessed I am to be given a chance to serve my less fortunate brothers and sisters. I really felt their joy when after surgery, the children smiled. Now, free from these facial deformities, they can go to school and lead normal lives.
My volunteerism helped me recognize my own gifts as a person and I now realize that I should share these gifts with others, that I should care because God takes care of me! - Ivy Melody Gallur
