Even after four decades, the heart-warming story of The Sound of Music with its popular songs is still one of the best-loved films among millions of theater-goers. To celebrate its 40th anniversary, the seven actors and actresses who played the Von Trapp children have been reunited once again.
Based on a true story of an Austrian baron, his singing children, the nun who became a nanny with whom he fell in love and their dramatic escape from the Nazis became a phenomenal hit! But what happened to the young stars after the release of the Sound of Music?
Charmian Carr (Liesl): Charmian was 21 when she played Liesl, the young girl who sang Sixteen Going On Seventeen. She is now a divorced mother of two with a decorating business and admits to have suffered an identity crisis that lasted at least 10 years after the film's release.
Nicholas Hammond (Friedrich): Nicholas played the eldest boy. He was 13 years old then. He studied at Princeton University before continuing his acting career, playing Spiderman in the 1970s. Nicholas is currently a divorced TV writer and producer living in Australia.
Heather Menzies (Louisa): Heather was a 14-year-old ballet student when she played the role of Louisa in the film. She married actor Robert Urich who died 3 years ago. In 1973, she posed for Playboy, but has stopped her career to become a mother to her three adopted children.
Duane Chase (Kurt): He was the "incorrigible" Kurt at 13. Duane soon found his fame a burden so that he refused to talk about the film. He obtained a geology degree, got married and is now a computer software designer for geologists.
Angela Cartwright (Brigitta): Angela was 12 when she did The Sound of Music. Born and raised in the UK, she found fame in the TV show Make Room for Daddy. She also starred in the science fiction series Lost in Space. Angela is now married with two children. She runs and owns a gift shop.
Debbie Turner (Marta): Debbie was 7 during the time of the film. She made TV commercials after finding fame, but when her career failed to blossom, she decided to go back to college. She is now a mother of four doing interior design work.
Kym Karath (Gretl): The baby of the Von Trapps. Kym was 5 when she played the role of Gretl. She had previously appeared in Spencer's Mountain with Henry Fonda and many other appearances. Her cute image had truly made her successful. Kym currently lives in New York with her nine year old son.
The Sound of Music will always remain one of the greatest films of all time! It's certainly one film that we can watch again and again and again! Congratulations on the films 40th anniversary!
