K Brosas shares battle with chronic anxiety disorder

CEBU, Philippines — Singer-comedian K Brosas revealed that she has been battling chronic anxiety disorder for quite some time now. Once, it cranked up while in the middle of taping an episode for the TV5 show “Sing Galing.”

“Honestly, inatake talaga ako two months ago. I think ang nag-trigger nun ay pagod na rin. Kasi masaya kami onstage tapos bigla nalang hindi na naman ako makahinga. Buti may medic, binabantayan ako. BP and everything hanggang sa kumalma ako kasi nagha-hyper ventilate ako. Buti nalang talaga, thank you Lord, na taping yun. Sabi ko talaga sorry,” the 46-year-old performer shared.

“Sa case ko kasi, since it’s case to case basis, kailangan ko talaga ng gamot. Prescribed naman yun. So lagi akong may gamot as needed.”

Her condition has always been the challenge in maintaining her funny persona onscreen. Known for her all-out energy every time she appears on television, Brosas sometimes excuses herself during tapings and live shows to take her medicine and gather herself.

“After 30-45 minutes, okay na ulit ako. Pero nagda-drama. Ewan ko ba, etong sakit na ito parang ayaw talaga akong tigilan. Parang minsan nami-miss niya ako. Parang ang sarap murahin kasi nagti-trigger eh.”

Together with “Sing Galing” judges – called the Juke Bosses – Rey Valera, Jessa Zaragoza, and Ronnie Liang, Brosas shared how much the videoke game show helps her go through each day.

“Ang laking bagay talaga ng ‘Sing Galing.’ Yung meron kang kasama na masaya at masaya ang surroundings mo, diba nakakalimutan mo yung pagod, problema, at pinagdadaanan mo?”

The contestants’ stories also inspire her to continue fighting despite trials. “Ang saya kasi lahat ng mga sumasali, may mga kwento. Magaganda ang mga kwento nila,” she added.

With the gradual acceptance of the existence of mental disorders in the Philippines and the steadfast fight by advocates to break the stigma, Brosas encourages everyone to acknowledge their issues, if any.

“As always, mental health is as important as our physical health. Fight lang, kapit lang,” she said.

First aired in the late ‘90s, the multi-awarded videoke game show and the first of its kind in the Philippines and Asia, “Sing Galing” offers equal opportunity to all contestants by simply challenging them to randomly sing any karaoke song. The show does not require perfect-pitch and strong vocals, you just need to have guts to ace the competition. The show airs 6:30 pm Mondays-Fridays on the Kapatid Network.
