Topsy-turvy, relatable family story in ‘Mommy Issues’

STAR CIRCUIT - Ricky Calderon - The Freeman

Award-winning comedienne Pokwang is the lead actress of Regal Entertainment’s Mother’s Day offering titled “Mommy Issues,” directed by Jose Javier Reyes.

It also stars Sue Ramirez, Jerome Ponce, Ryan Bang and Ms. Gloria Diaz who all had a fun time during the Zoom presscon that was viewed live on Facebook.

Pokwang said she enjoyed filming even if they were on a lock-in shoot because they had a fun set. Besides, she has a love interest in the film played by Ryan.

“Marami kaming kulitan at sweet moments nito kaya mas lalo akong nag-enjoy sa shoot,” said Pokwang.

Ms. Pokwang experienced anxiety when the lockdown was first imposed last year. “A lot of people lost their jobs, including me. Tapos we were all just inside our houses from morning ‘til night. I feel bad for my children who were just inside our house and couldn’t get out. I know it was a precaution so we won’t get infected by the virus but it was a very difficult situation.”

To ease her boredom and anxiety, Pokwang, who is a good cook, channeled her energies towards the kitchen. She not only kept her worries away, she also earned money in the process and provide jobs.

“I fought my anxiety sa pamamagitan ng pagluluto at maganda naman ang ibinunga nito dahil additional income din ito for me and my family.”

As a mother, Pokwang enjoys the company of her kids. “I am blessed with beautiful children. I am happy because they are close to me. Malalambing sila. Siyempre masarap ang pakiramdam na nilalambing ka ng mga anak mo at nalalambing mo rin sila in return.”

While she was sad when her mom passed away, she believes her mom guides her from heaven that’s why she still has an active career.

“Mommy Issues” revolves around Ella (Pokwang), a hardworking single mother who has devoted her life for her only daughter Katya (Sue). Her zealousness to protect her daughter leads to conflict but thanks to grandmother Fenny (Gloria Diaz), they blow over because of the quirky and fun ways she helps bridge the gap between her loved ones.

Migo (Jerome) and Mr. Kim Jae Ho (Ryan) provide the love interests for mother and daughter and with it comes to additional complications in their already hairy relationship. The result is as real as can be – a fun, topsy-turvy story of a family that every typical mother and daughter can identify with.

Spice up your Mother’s Day celebration with “Mommy Issues” available worldwide on May 7 via Upstream.ph, KTX, iWant, and TFC at Php 250, good for the entire family. You can watch the trailer on Youtube, Facebook, Tiktok OR Instagram. Visit Regal Entertainment Inc.’s social media pages for updates.

How can a list of the greatest performances of the last decade be credible if it does not include Nora Aunor?

An entertainment portal came out with a list of greatest actresses for the last 15 years but excluded the Superstar.

When asked why they ignored Nora, they said the list was based on actresses who appeared in mainstream movies. So are they also coming out with a similar list of performances from indie films?

In coming out with a list of best performances, indie films should not be overlooked because some of the best films with noteworthy performances are in indies. If you ignore indie films, that is short of saying these are not good enough.

Ate Guy made some of the best indie films in the last 10 years. She even won awards for these not only locally but from international critics like for her movie “Thy Womb.”

We cannot say that the list made by the site is credible since the mainstream movies in the list are inferior compared to the movies made by Ate Guy, as well as other indie films the performances of which they chose to ignore.
