Leo’s winning streak continues at SAG awards

CEBU, Philippines - Leonardo DiCaprio is one step closer to winning that Oscar.

At Saturday night’s 2016 SAG Awards, one of the most buzzed about categories of the evening easily had to have been the Best Actor in a Movie. But after casting all the votes, there was one performance on top.

Step on up DiCaprio to claim your trophy for “The Revenant.”

“I am truly humbled by this as it comes from all of you, my fellow actors,” the 41-year-old told the crowd. “Thank you from the bottom of my heart.”

He continued, “For any young actors out there, I encourage you to study the history of cinema because as the history of cinema unfolds, we all stand on the shoulders of giants. So I want to thank all the actors in this room who made this possible.”

After winning both Best Actor at the 2016 Golden Globes, many critics are already speculating that this may be the year DiCaprio takes home the biggest award of them all.

For now, DiCaprio is soaking in the praise and giving thanks for all who made the award possible.

“To my parents, thank you for listening to an overly ambitious, slightly annoying 13-year-old who wanted to go on auditions every day after school,” he concluded his evening speech. “I would not be standing up here without you. Thank you.”

Meanwhile, newspaper drama “Spotlight,” badly in need of some Oscar momentum, also took the top honor of Best Cast.

Other favorites cemented their front-runner status, as well.

Brie Larson, the star of the captive mother-son daughter drama “Room,” won best actress. Alicia Vikander took best supporting actress for “The Danish Girl.”

But supporting actor went to Idris Elba for “Beasts of No Nation.” Elba was one of the most notable black actors overlooked by the Academy Awards, which instead fielded all-white acting nominees.

The SAG Awards, conversely, crowded its Shrine Auditorium stage in Los Angeles with a diverse group of winners including Queen Latifah and Viola Davis.

In the Movie category, another victor was “Mad Max: Fury Road” for Best Stunt ensemble.

In the Television category, the winners were: Jeffrey Tambor, Best Actor in a comedy series for “Transparent”; Uzo Aduba, Best Actress in a comedy series for Orange is the New Black”; “Orange is the New Black” for Best Comedy series cast; Idris Elba, Best Actor in a movie or miniseries for “Luther”; Queen Latifah, Best Actress in a movie or miniseries for “Bessie”; “Downton Abbey,” Best drama series cast; Kevin Spacey, Best Actor in a drama series for “House of Cards”; Viola Davis, Best Actress in a drama series for “How to Get Away With Murder” and “Game of Thrones” for Best Stunt ensemble.

A Life Achievement trophy was also given to Carol Burnett. (FREEMAN)
