11th Golden Screen Awards takes on novel format

The Entertainment Press Society (ENPRESS, Inc.) honors the best cinematic achievements of the past year as the 11th Golden Screen Awards gets underway on October 4, Saturday, at Teatrino at the Promenade, in Greenhills, San Juan City.

Hosted by John “Sweet” Lapus, the resident host of the Golden Screen Awards and winner of the Best Performance of a Leading Actor in Motion Picture (Musical or Comedy), the 11th Golden Screen Awards pays tribute to topnotch filmmakers and actors in what promises to be another memorable night.

The 11th Golden Screen Awards is presented by Dr. Tam Mateo and Nash Coffee by Manila Golden Archer Group. Major sponsors are Senator Nancy Binay, PomePure Nexus 7P, Manila City Councilor Yul Servo, CML Beach Resort (located at Barangay Nonong Casto, Lemery, Batangas), Dong Juan (located at 72 Mother Ignacia Street, QC) and Manila City Vice Mayor Isko Moreno.

Up for grabs are trophies in 20 categories, including best motion picture (drama) being contested by “On The Job,” “Transit,” “Ekstra,” “Ano  Ang Kulay ng mga Nakalimutang Pangarap?” and “Norte, Hangganan ng Kasaysayan.”

Competing for best motion picture (musical or comedy) are “Four Sisters and A Wedding,” “It Takes a Man and Woman,” and “Instant Mommy.”

Eternal movie queen Ms. Susan Roces is recipient of the Lino Brocka Lifetime Achievement Award in recognition of her exemplary qualities as an actress and as a producer.

The 11th Golden Screen Awards promises to be another memorable night as it takes on a novel format in its awards presentation. Instead of the usual podium style, John Lapus takes on a role of an entertainment talk show host in a program billed as “Unli Night of Laughter and Honor” – combination of a talk show and the pomp of an awards night in a very light setting.

Sweet, as the talk show host, engages the winners in a light banter, free-wheeling conversation, asking them their thoughts of being victorious and some. It promises to be a different kind of night for all the winners.

Performing musical numbers in the 11th Golden Screen Awards are two Breakthrough Actor nominees –Ruru Madrid (nominated for the movie “Bamboo Flowers”) and Adrian Cabido (nominated for the movie “Lauriana”) who will render song-and-dance numbers. Also performing is Gabrielle Garcia, a young singer from GMA Artist Center.

The jury members of the 11th Golden Screen Awards had their deliberations and final voting about a month ago even before the nominees were revealed publicly. This was one of the innovations instituted by the Golden Screen Awards to safeguard the integrity of its choices. The votes will be counted tonight and the winners will be revealed tomorrow. Only the canvassers who tabulated the votes would know the winners. Not even the jury members of the Golden Screen Awards know who will be proclaimed as winners.

Battling it out for Best Performance by an Actress in a Lead Role (Drama) are Cherie Gil (“Sonata”), Irma Adlawan (“Transit”), Lorna Tolentino (“Burgos”), Lovi Poe (“Sana Dati”), Rustica Carpio (“Ano Ang Kulay ng mga Nakalimutang Pangarap?”) and Vilma Santos (“Ekstra”).

For Best Performance by An Actor in a Lead Role (Drama), the finalists are Arnold Reyes (“Ang Tag-araw ni Twinkle”), Dingdong Dantes (“Dance of the Steelbars”), Jhong Hilario (“Badil”), Joel Torre (“On the Job”), and Mark Gil (“A Philippino Story”).

Contenders in the Best Performance by An Actress in a Lead Role (Musical or Comedy) are Angel Locsin and Bea Alonzo  (“Four Sisters and A Wedding”), Eugene Domingo (“Instant Mommy”), Sarah Geronimo (“It Takes A Man and A Woman”) and Tuesday Vargas (“Ang Pabo Man ay Turkey Rin”).

For Best Performance by An Actor in  a Lead Role (Musical or Comedy), the finalists are Enchong Dee (“Four Sisters and A Wedding”), John Lloyd Cruz (“It Takes A Man and A Woman”), Rafael Rosell (“Gaydar”) and Tom Rodriguez (“Gaydar”).

Angel Aquino (“Ang Huling Chacha ni Anita”), Coney Reyes (“Four Sisters and A Wedding”), Jackie Lou Blanco (“Ano Ang Kulay ng mga Nakalimutang Pangarap?”), Ruby Ruiz and Tart Carlos (“Ekstra”) are the contenders in the Best Performance by An Actress in a Supporting Role (Drama, Musical or Comedy).

For Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role- Drama, Musical or Comedy, the finalists are Dick Israel (“Badil”), Joey Marquez (“On the Job”), Joey Paras (“Dance of the Steelbars”), Marlon Rivera (“Ekstra”) and Ping Medina (“Transit”).

The Best Breakthrough Performance by an Actress is being contested by Krystle Valentino (“Purok 7”), Isabelle Daza (“Lihis”), Jasmine Curtis Smith (“Transit”), Max Collins (“Bamboo Flowers”), Teri Malvar (“Ang Huling Chacha ni Anita”), and Yeng Constantino (“Shift”).

For Best Breakthrough Performance by An Actress, the finalists are Adrian Cubido (“Lauriana”), Chino Jalandoni (“Sonata”), Marc Justine Alvarez (“Transit”), Mimi Juareza (“Quick Change”) and Ruru Madrid (“Bamboo Flowers”).

The Best Direction is being contested by Erik Matti (“On the Job”), Hannah Espina (“Transit”), Jeffrey Jeturian (“Ekstra”), Jose Javier Reyes (“Ano Ang Kulay ng mga Nakalimutang Pangarap?”), and Lav Diaz (“Norte, Hangganan ng Kasaysayan”).
