Kim Chiu offends press folk

- Ricky L. Calderon - The Freeman

People in showbiz are talking about Kim Chiu’s statement at the presscon of their new movie “Bride for Rent” held at the Dolphy Theater Tuesday night. Many of the entertainment writers present were taken aback by the words uttered by the soft-spoken actress.

At the presscon, Kim was asked by a veteran writer as to the real status of her relationship with Xian Lim, her partner in “Bride for Rent.” Same question was asked of Xian.

Her reply was, “Ako, ano, sinagot na rin namin ‘to sa last presscon naming dalawa. We don’t owe you any of our personal lives, siguro.”

“Kasi, you can think naman whatever you want, as long as you’re happy when you watch us on TV. Nakikita n’yo kung paano kami ma-in-love, ganyan. ‘Yun na ‘yun.

“And lahat naman tayo, meron tayong mga hindi dapat i-share or dapat i-share. It’s our choice. And I hope you guys respect it.”

For his part, Xian said, “In time naman po, malalaman po ng lahat kung ano po ‘yung status or kung anuman po ang gustong malaman nila. Pero I don’t think this is the time (or) this is the perfect time para magsalita kung anuman po ‘yung nangyayari.

“Pero in time, we won’t be selfish about it. We will be more than happy to share it with you guys.”

For majority of the press people, they felt offended by Kim answering, “We don’t owe you any of our personal lives.” She could have said it nicely or reworded it like “May I not answer the question?” or say it another way.

Kim’s answer seemed rather abrasive and was tantamount to saying she doesn’t need to share with anyone her personal life. Well, she may have a point there but since she is a public figure, and a popular one at that, her fans would surely be curious as to the state of her love matters, hence that question.

Since a lot of press people reacted, prompting another columnist to say “You are fooling us,” in the end, Kim said sorry but by that time most of the press had stepped out of the Dolphy Theater. “Sorry po yung term ko, sorry talaga,” she said.

But honestly speaking, the entertainment writers can’t get the point why Kim and Xian could not answer if they are really an item. They look good together and we presume they are both unattached so there’s no impediment in them being together. Maybe they were just bidding their time. But what was not nice was the way Kim answered the question. If she didn’t want to answer then she could have politely said so and the press would understand.

“Bride for Rent” is Star Cinema’s opening salvo for 2014 and both stars agreed they are feeling the pressure since Star Cinema opted to make their movie as its initial offering for the year. The movie is directed by Mae Czarina Cruz who considers the film as very special since it will be her last movie as a single woman. The lady director is set to get married soon to her high school friend.

The movie, which also stars Matt Evans, Dennis Padilla, Empoy, and Pilita Corrales as the mother of Xian, opens Jan. 15 on theaters nationwide.

The forthcoming awards season will be an exciting one as the perennial rivals Nora Aunor and Vilma Santos will be pitted against each other. The Noranians and the Vilmanians will be at it again as two movie queens have good film entries that will surely figure prominently in the awards derby.

Both Nora and Vilma have indie films that were entered in two separate local indie filmfests. At the Cinemalaya Independent Film Festival, Vilma’s “Ekstra: The Bit Player” was an entry while Nora’s “Ang Kuwento ni Mabuti” competed at the CineFilipino Film Festival. Ate Vi won as best actress in Cinemalaya but Ate Guy lost to a young actress in CineFilipino.

Sure to be in the running for Best Actress because of their noteworthy acting are Cherie Gil (Sonata); Lorna Tolentino (Burgos); Rustica Carpio (Ano Ang Kulay Ng Mga Nalimutang Pangarap); Teri Malvar (Huling Cha-Cha Ni Anita); Irma Adlawan (Transit); Lovi Poe (Sana Dati); Agot Isidro (Mga Anino Ng Kahapon), and Eugene Domingo (Kimmy Dora: The Kiyemeng  Sequel).

Congratulations to all the people involved in the production of “My Little Bossings,” the 2013 Metro Manila Film Festival (MMFF) box-office hit which continues to hold sway at the box-office.

The movie, starring Vic Sotto, Kris Aquino, Aiza Seguerra, Ryzza Mae Dizon and James “Bimby” Aquino Yap, grossed P50.5 million on opening day, setting the highest record ever attained by a Filipino movie of all time.

Vic and Kris, who both appeared in the movie aside from being co-producers (together with Orly Ilacad at Tony Tuviera) are very pleased that “My Little Bossings” exceeded their expectations with its strong showing at the box-office. “We are so thankful to everyone who found time to watch our movie,” they said.

The success of “My Little Bossings” is an encouragement for the producers — OctoArts Films, M-Zet Films, APT Entertainment and Kris Aquino Productions – to do more family-oriented movies.

But the producers won’t forget the contribution of child sensation Ryzza Mae and Bimby since they are the biggest attractions of the comedy film.

“My Little Bossings” has an extended run in theaters nationwide. (FREEMAN)
