Vina holds benefit concert for northern Cebu

CEBU, Philippines - Cebuana singer-actress Vina Morales continues to enjoy an active career in Manila since breaking into the showbiz industry back in 1986. She may have considered the capital her home all these years, but the star of ABS-CBN’s ongoing soap “Maria Mercedes” remains fluent in her native Bisaya dialect.

“Aguy, bugoy-bugoy kaayo ko sa Bogo,” Vina fondly recalled her childhood in her northern Cebu hometown with a laugh.” I used to sing in church. I was in a choir and Fr. Fritz Malinao was the one who discovered me and wrote my winning piece ‘Paglaum.’ The rest is history. All in all, I’m thankful that I grew up in Bogo with so many loving people.”

So imagine Vina’s worry upon hearing that Bogo, including other towns in northern Cebu, was one of those greatly affected by super typhoon Yolanda last Nov. 8. “It’s very sad that this happened but we have to stand up and be strong for each other. I will continue to pray for everyone,” she said.

Aside from that, relatives from her father’s side were also residents of Tacloban City, the hardest hit area in the Philippines.

“It’s such a long story, but I’m thankful that they are safe, alive and are now living with us in Manila. I pray for that other families will similarly be reunited,” Vina expressed.

What better way to contribute in helping her fellowmen recover from the tragedy than using her gift of voice, Vina thought. She will do just that, through a benefit concert for the typhoon victims of northern Cebu dubbed “Seasons of Love” to be held this Sunday, Nov. 24, 4 p.m. at SM City Cebu Cinema 1. The Marlon Wafer-directed show will also feature collections of Cebuano fashion designers.

On her message to Yolanda victims, especially in northern Cebu, Vina said, “I’m out of words, but my prayers and support are with them. That’s why we’re all doing this event for them and will continue to do more to raise more funds. I thank everyone especially all the organizers. I am happy to be a part of this event. Tabang gyud tang tanan.”

Vina said concert-goers should prepare to sing and dance along with her as she’s set to perform Jennifer Lopez hits, 70s to 80s music and teleserye theme songs. “I will make sure to give the audience good and happy entertainment,” Vina vowed. “As for the fashion show, I am looking forward to the designs of our very talented Cebuano designers who are participating to gather funds for northern Cebu who were affected by super typhoon Yolanda.”

“I am inviting everyone to support this event so we can help residents of  northern Cebu. I hope people will take time out to watch and invite their friends as well. Concert-goers can also bring their donations that will be brought in relief operations. Let’s help northern Cebu and God bless your hearts,” said Vina.

Tickets, pegged at P300 and P500 which comes with a “Seasons of Love” bag, can be purchased at the SM Cinema 1 ticket outlet. Tickets will also be sold outside the venue on Nov. 24, on a first come first serve basis.

The “Seasons of Love” benefit concert is sponsored by Rotary Club of Metro Cebu, SM Cinema, Wafer Models Philippines, Radisson Blu Hotel Cebu, Cary Santiago, Philipp Tampus and The Freeman. (FREEMAN)
