Victories at 9th Golden screen awards

The comedy “Ang Babae sa Septic Tank,” bannered by Asian Best Actress People’s Choice awardee Eugene Domingo, was the big winner at the 9thGolden Screen Awards given by the Entertainment Press Society.

The film picked up a total of six trophies, including the best actress award for Eugene, who also won as best actress at the Cinemalaya last year where “Ang Babae sa Septic Tank” was also a big winner.

It also won the award for Best Motion Picture- Musical or Comedy and the Best Director trophy for Marlon Rivera. It also won the award for Best Screenplay for Chris Martinez and Best Musical Score for Vincent de Jesus.

This is the third Golden Screen Awards trophy for Eugene. She first won for the movie “Pisay” as Best Supporting Actress. Two years ago, she won Best Performance by An Actress in a Leading Role (Comedy or Musical) for Kimi Dora.

“Nino,” a drama about a family on a decline after a glorious past, won the Best Motion Picture Drama.

It also won the awards for Best Performance by an Actresss in a Supporting Role for Shamaine Centenera-Buencamino and Best Performance by An Actor in Supporting Role for Art Acuna.

Aga Muhlach won the Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role- Drama for “In the Name of Love,” the only actor to win from a non-indie film. “In the Name of Love” was produced by Star Cinema.

Jean Garcia won the Best Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role (Drama) for “Ang Sayaw ng Dalawang Kaliwang Paa.” It is her best actress award for film and was thrilled to have been given such honor. Her hands were still shaking when we got to talk to her after the photo-op for all the winners right after the awards night.

Edgar Allan Guzman (Ligo na U, Lapit Na Me) and Mart Escudero (Zombadings 1: Patayin sa Shokot si Remington) tied for award for Best Performance by An Actor in a Leading Role (Musical or Comedy).

In his acceptance speech, Edgar apologized to the members of the press and to his manager Noel Ferrer who haven’t talked to him for more than a month because the actor had been remiss of his duties. He promised to become a changed man and thanked the Golden Screen Awards for his victory, a reprise of his win at the Cinemalaya last year where he also won Best Actor.

It’s the second best actor award as well for Mart, who was named Best Actor by Gawad Tanglaw, for his role as the young man who became gay because of a curse.

Rocco Nacino won the Breakthrough Performance by an Actor for “Ang Sayaw ng Dalawang Kaliwang Paa” while Angeli Nicole Sanoy was recipient of Breakthrough Performance by An Actress for “Patikul.”

Superstar Nora Aunor was recipient of the Gawad Lino Brocka Lifetime Achievement Award. The Noranians were in full force and cheered lustily when it was the Superstar’s turn to be conferred her award. Nora was also given a standing ovation by the audience.

The awards night was hosted by John “Sweet” Lapus who brought the house down with his antics, including stripping to his bra and panty towards the end of awards night. He wore four gowns and earlier he joked that he’d only be wearing bra and panty at the end of the show. And he did just that.

Dingdong Dantes, maligned by a group of writers close to Gov. ER Ejercito who failed to secure a nomination, attended the awards night and even presented the Best Picture award. It was a fine gesture for Dingdong and we at Enpress, salute him for his show of support. He fulfilled his promise that win or lose, he’d attend the awards night.

Through this column, we would like to thank all those who lent their support to make the Golden Screen Awards a success - to TV5, Mr. Perci Intalan and Paparazzi for providing a VTR for the tribute to Ate Guy, to those who provided the musical numbers namely Krizzia, Lovely Embuscado, Frencheska Farr, Bryan Termulo and the all-male group Down to Mars who did the opening number.

Special thanks to Sweet who agreed to host the show despite a short notice and to Mr. Noel Ferrer who wrote the script and who had helped the Golden Screen Awards and Enpress in more ways than one. Mabuhay kayong lahat!
