This is our article on the revival of the Golden Screen TV Awards, which came out in the souvenir program. The Golden Screen TV Awards was held last night at the Teatrino in Greenhills. We are sharing this with the readers of The Freeman. We are doing the coverage of the awards night for our column on Friday. Our sincere congratulations to all the winners and we thank all the stars and the executives of the TV networks who lent us a hand in making the Golden Screen Awards a success.

Special thanks also goes to Ms. Angeli Pangilinan-Valenciano, director Freddie Santos, the production staff of Genesis, our generous sponsors -Laguna Gov. Jeorge "ER" Ejercito, Senators Jinggoy Estrada and Tito Sotto, Joel Cruz and Denz Marketing and Trading. May your tribe increase. Read on:

"The TV industry has become a dynamic force in the entertainment industry. While movies used to be the most dominant form of entertainment for Filipinos (this was during the time producing movies was a passion for many film productions), the dwindling income from the film industry started the downswing for what used to be a lucrative business for many people.

It was the TV industry that saved the lives of many showbiz personalities. They have found jobs on TV that are ultimately as lucrative as the ones they used to have in the film industry. There were more acting jobs on television and the movie actors found it easy to crossover from movies to the boob tube. The emergence of the teleseryes, fantaseryes, soap operas (or however you may want to call them) opened the doors for the actors, and even technical people from the film industry.

With more stars and creative personalities to produce shows and programs, network competition intensified between giants ABS-CBN and GMA Network. New programs and innovations, if not experimentations, emerged to make the TV landscape an exciting venue for information and entertainment. With TV5 coming into the fray, all the more that the TV industry became lively.

It is with this compelling backdrop that the Entertainment Press Society decided to revive its Golden Screen TV Awards after an absence of six years. So much has changed from the TV landscape six years ago till now. The dynamism and enthusiasm manifested by the various networks, not only on free TV but on the cable channels as well, have changed the landscape of TV viewing. For years now, we get enchanted and thrilled not only by local programs crafted by the think tanks of the creative teams of each networks, but also by other program formats from successful franchise shows in other parts of the globe but tweaked and re-designed to suit the Filipino viewers’ taste and sensibilities. Our networks themselves have tremendously expanded their sourcing of shows and formats. That’s aside from bringing to our living rooms, restaurants, and other suitable venues via satellite live coverage(s) of exciting global events. In short, they have grown immensely, too, over the years. Television has brought the world closer to Filipinos.

When we decided to revive the TV awards, it was also in our minds to inspire our TV industry people and commend them for their good work. Thus we decided to add more categories to enable us to honor the outstanding works of our friends in the TV industry. As we stressed earlier, more program formats have emerged and these were effective tools in bringing information and entertainment.

We also decided to include the news and public affairs program as well. Programs in that category have also made great strides in providing the public with topnotch and informative coverage both here and abroad, thus whetting the people’s appetite for swift and reliable news. We’re happy to have included in the shows we reviewed those produced in the Philippines and airing in cable channels that mainly have foreign programming.

Tonight we present to you the new set of winners in the various categories. While there’s only one winner who will walk away with a trophy clasped in their hands, in our hearts, these outstanding shows and personalities are winners in their own right because they worked hard in bringing to our homes the sights and sounds of our changing world.
