Aiza Seguerra Uncomfortable With "Asia's Acoustic Sensation" Tag New album Perhaps Love released all over Asia

Aiza Seguerra had a successful mall show at the activity center of Robinson’s Galleria last Sunday, May 30, which was witnessed by a good crowd. Dubbed as “Asia’s Acoustic Sensation,” the former child star now acoustic singer is promoting her latest album “Perhaps Love” under Star Records. The event was sponsored by Robinson’s Galleria, Odyssey Music and Video, GBX Shoes, and 93.9 IFM

She sang several cuts from her album like Sukiyaki, Ellie My Love, Perhaps Love, Ngayong Wala Ka Na (from the film “Kimmy Dora”), and the carrier single I’ll Be Over You.

The other songs in her 12-track album are Almost Over You, She’s Gone, A Thousand Miles, Forever and A Day, and Angel.

In our backstage interview with Aiza after the show, we asked her comment on being tagged as “Asia’s Acoustic Sensation.”

She has this to say: “Honestly, I feel very uncomfortable kasi ever since naman ayoko nang mga label-label. Well, thank you for the recognition. Pero I’d rather na tinatawag lang nila ako as Aiza.”

While she doesn’t feel any pressure being labeled as such, the voice behind the phenomenal hit Pagdating ng Panahon said that she finds it a little bit corny. “Gusto ko simple lang, kasi simple lang naman ako. I just want people to call me [by my name]. No need for titles.”

Likewise, Aiza also doesn’t feel any pressure to mae her new album do better, sales-wise, than her last.

“That’s one thing that we don’t want to think about. Honestly, that’s hard to do. If we’d always think that way, we’d only end up disappointed or frustrated if we won’t be able to achieve that. Foremost in our mind is to make beautiful and good music. It’s up to the people if they would like the album or not. We would do our best to come up with good album and hope that the people will like it,” said the singer.

Aiza said that she’s happy with her partnership with Star Records as well as the kind of support that the record label is giving her. After all, she’s been given full creative control— something that not all record labels are wont to do.

 “Oh yes, I do have creative control that’s why I am very happy to be with Star Records. They are really very supportive and I am very thankful that we’ve been given full control of the creative process,” she related. “That seldom happens, but they really trust me and my producer Mike Villegas on what we want to do and what we feel is best for the album. In return, we make sure that whatever we would do would be beautiful and that we don’t fail them,” she added.

“Perhaps Love” was released simultaneously all over Asia, specifically in countries like Singapore, Japan, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia, and Korea. The master was done abroad, although it was recorded here in the Philippines. That made the album truly special.

“Hindi naman ako ganoon ka-special if that’s what you are trying to say kasi sa Singapore at sa ibang lugar sa Asia, I am considered as an independent artist, not mainstream, which is okay for me. When you say pop music, it is more of dance music and stuff like that, which obviously I am not. I am okay with my stature as a singer and I am happy having been able to reach out to a wide audience as well,” she explained.

What would she say as the secret or key to the success of her musical career?

“Honestly, I really don’t know. All I know is that in whatever I do, I give my all—my whole heart and soul. And I try to be professional, whether in singing or in acting assignments. In whatever job that I do, I make it a point to give my best. Well, I expect nothing less. God gave me this opportunity. I won’t let it pass. Rather, I make good use of it,” Aiza said.

She is also so secure and happy with the trajectory of her career that if there’s one thing more that she wishes for, she said that is to stay long in this business, which she had been at for 23 years.

“I wish for longevity. I want to be in this business for as long as I can and for as long as the people want me. I wish the people would continue to like me and my music. In return, I want to be happy with my music,” said Aiza.

Isn’t she wishing to have an album or a song that would land her a spot in the Billboard Hot 100 chart, just like what Charice Pempengco had accomplished?

“Honestly, what I can say is that what is for you will be given to you. I think there are people destined to make it abroad. There are people who are destined for local stardom and there are more people who are destined to make beautiful music. Iba’t-iba siguro ang nakasulat sa stars natin,” she said.

“I am very, very proud of Charice because she reached that milestone. Not all Filipinos are able to do that. But for me, honestly, when I think about it right now, I don’t think there’s something more that I could wish for. I am happy with what I have. I am happy with the balance. Hindi ako sobrang sikat na sikat. At the same time, hindi naman ako nawawala. Nariyan pa rin ako. And I think iyon ang maganda. Suwabe lang. I think para tumagal ka sa trabahong ito dapat suwabe lang. And I am very happy na sa trabaho kong ito, 27 na ako ngayon and I’ve been in the business for 23 years and I am still here. Doon pa lang sa aspeto na iyon, happy na ako.

Aside from the usual mall shows for the promo her “Perhaps Love” album, Aiza is having a special show at Zirkoh Morato on June 19. Also in the works is a mall show in Cebu, so do watch out for it.
