CHARICE ON "GLEE"?: 'How I wish!' says pop star
CEBU, Philippines - “How I wish!” So went one of the tweets of international singing sensation Charice Pempengco to refute reports that she will soon join the cast of the hit American comedy musical TV series, “Glee.”
Such report first appeared in the online site of the Philippine Daily Inquirer on May 26, citing Charice’s Philippine talent manager, Grace Mendoza, as the source. But the link to the story has since been updated, which is now carrying Charice’s posts on her official Twitter account which sought to douse the rumors.
With the rising star of Charice in the global music industry thanks to a powerhouse band of backers—from Oprah Winfrey to David Foster—the report swiftly mutated in the social media world, and even found its way to popular foreign celebrity blogging sites such as PerezHilton.com, wherein Charice first learned about the fast-growing buzz. The blog read: “The pop star was just signed on as a series regular for the coming season of ‘Glee’.”
“Okay, erase it! No Charice on Glee. hahaha! ” Charice tweeted.
“I just want to let you all know, that it’s not true that I’m going to be on ‘Glee,’” she tweeted anew.
The pop star also retweeted her mother Racquel’s post about the report. “FYI - rumors that Charice [will appear] on GLEE show [are] not true, [I] talked to MS Grace Mendoza Charice handler, she had no idea.”
Asked on Twitter as to what made her manager say that she’s going to be part of “Glee”, she posted: “Maybe my handler is confused.”
According to news reports, during Charice’s Philippine album launch cum mini-concert last May 23 in a Manila mall, she hinted of a “big surprise” for her fans. “Meron akong big surprise. Pero hindi ko muna sasabihin ngayon. I’m sure matutuwa kayo. A lot of people are talking about this thing. Very, very happy ako na naging part ako… ng… ng… eto,” she was quoted as telling her audience.
When pressed for more details in a presscon afterwards, she reportedly told the media: “Itong thing na ‘to, super in ngayon. Imma say a show.”
If you come to think of it, “Glee”—given its musical orientation, multi-racial casting, plus its status as the current toast of American TV—does seem like the logical “big surprise” that Charice had alluded to. But since she’s repeatedly denied, at least on Twitter, that it’s not “Glee,” then, fans will have to wait with bated breaths for that “big surprise” to unfold in the coming days.
Meanwhile, Charice is currently in Japan for a series of shows to promote her self-titled international album. The 18-year-old debuted her album on the “Oprah Winfrey Show” last May 11—her fourth guesting in the show to date—wherein she performed her first single “Pyramid” featuring R&B singer Iyaz. Her album has now taken the no. 8 spot in the Billboard 200, a weekly chart ranking the highest-selling albums and EPs in the US.
