CEBU, Philippines - Part of the week-long activities in highlighting the South Road Properties launch is the staging of a Concert @ Baywalk tonight, May 8.
According to Brian Lim, event organizer of the Cebu Festival 2010, it is expected that the bands Sponge Cola and Stagecrew, as well as stand-up comedian Willie Nepomuceno, who is noted for his spoofs on presidentiables, would provide entertainment to cap various events that opened last May 1.
“The people of Cebu should enjoy SRP, so they would know more about SRP kay ila god ni,” Lim said during a presscon.
The SRP launching may have raised questions as to its “real motive,” having been scheduled days before the May 10 polls; however, Lim clarified that the plan was hatched “three years ago pa.”
“It is envisioned to be an annual event, much like the Sinulog, with the multitude of events to significantly boost Cebu’s economic and tourism industries,” he added.
The concert at the SRP Baywalk is free and open to the public. For those whose concern is the mode of transportation to and from the SRP, Kaohsiung buses (with Cebu Fest posters) have already been fielded at certain designated pick-up points from 3:15 p.m. to 10 p.m.: IT Park via Ayala, Fuente via Colon, SM City Cebu, Pardo Church via Mambaling, Guadalupe Church via Tisa, E-Mall or Cebu City Hall to SRP. Aside from this, sporting events (with matching exhibition games/clinics) are scheduled this May 8 starting at 8 a.m. like Baseball and Softball; Touch Rugby, Car Show and Drag Race; Flag Football and Soccer; and Ultimate Frisbee. Boxing will be at 6 p.m.; and Mixed Martial Arts at 9 p.m. Also this May 8, a Chess match happens at 2 p.m., while the Barbecue Cookout and Sundown Marathon Run are both set at 4 p.m.
Further, Lim who heads Pyroworks, which already has a 12-year history in the local pyrotechnics industry, said that at 7 p.m. today, a Fireworks Record Attempt will be part of the activities. He said that his group is eyeing at firing 128,000 rockets in six seconds or not more than 30 seconds.
According to Lim, similar feat was already achieved in Europe when 110,000 rockets were fired but failed to make it to the Guinness Book of World Record for alleged failure to have the event documented for purpose of verification.
Aside from the attempt to chart a new world record, a grand fireworks display will follow wherein Lim would showcase the latest in pyro products, like the water cannons. “Watch the water cannons create effects above the water which serves as extra canvas,” Lim said.
Apart from the sporting events, visitors can enjoy carnival rides and shop at the bazaar.
