Nora Aunor disappoints Vancouver fans
VANCOUVER—The much anticipated “comeback” concert of the Superstar, Miss Nora Aunor ended up to be a lengthy series of front acts at the Massey Theatre in New Westminster on Friday, March 5.
Although local artists including the popular Dynamix Band gave outstanding performances, Nora’s fans started getting edgy after several announcements that she was coming in “10 mins” were made and there was no Nora.
La Aunor finally appeared on stage after 2 ½ hours. Ugly cat calls were already reverberating in the theatre when Nora showed up. In a dramatic way, she told her fans that she was not ready to perform and that she will be back in April with her children to entertain them. Nora obliged to pose with some of her fans for a few minutes until the theatre management reminded them that they all had to leave, because their time was up.
“Bakit naman ganyan?” complained an 85-year-old fan who came all the way from Bellingham. “Kung wala siya sa condition, dapat sinabi na agad. May boses naman siya, nakapagsalita nga ng matagal..palagay ko hindi iyan darating sa April. Kahit na dumating pa siya, hindi na ako manood. Mukhang has been na siya. I’ll just cherish my memories of what she used to be.”
Nora Aunor arrived with her entourage at 1:30 pm on March 4 at the Vancouver International Airport from California with an entourage of 8 people including long time companion John Rendez. Reports immediately spread that she was fidgetty upon arrival and seemed “high” on something.
Words also leaked out that her producers who were from Toronto had difficulty in getting Aunor to cooperate. She allegedly dodged her designated driver, took the cab and basically refused to comply with agreements the producers made with local businesses and media sponsors. Rumors also alleged that she didn’t even try to rehearse with the band.
The producers apparently didn’t have any choice but to call Nora’s lawyer who came to advise her to cooperate.
During a meet and greet dinner at Kentizen Restaurant, Nora Aunor was reported to rumble lengthily straying away from specific questions posted by the local media.
Aunor, whose real name is Nora Cabaltera Villamayor, has been arrested by LA airport authorities with eight grams of the drug methamphetamine substance or “shabu” in her carry-on bag and a glass pipe wrapped in a T-shirt on March 30, 2005.
Nora voluntarily went into a drug diversion program (US drug rehab) in order to expunged her arrest and court records. After one year as an outpatient of the program, charges against her were dismissed.
Known as “The Superstar” to her fans, Aunor has appeared in more than 170 films and recorded more than two dozen albums, including scores of hit singles.
On screen, she starred with the leading men of her time, including Joseph “Erap” Estrada, who later became president.
She won the best actress award at the 2004 International Festival for Independent Films in Brussels, Belgium. In 1997, she won for best actress at the East Asia Film and Television Festival Awards in Penang, Malaysia.
Nora Aunor’s concert at the Massey Theatre is supposed to be the first of a series of Canadian 3 city tour. As of presstime, it is not known if she will still proceed to her Toronto and Edmonton engagements.
