CEBU, Philippines - The Australian Embassy’s 7th Australian Film Festival opened in Cebu last November 9 to showcase six critically-acclaimed films that will provide Filipino moviegoers the opportunity to experience Australian film excellence and learn more about Australian popular culture, history and contemporary values.
Australian director Elissa Down (centre), flanked by Ambassador Rod Smith and renowned Filipino director Tikoy Aguiluz, opened the Manila leg of the festival in Makati City with the screening of her film, The Black Balloon. The film follows the story of a teenager trying to fit in as his family moves to a new home while taking care of his autistic older brother. The film was awarded the prestigious Berlin International Film Festival Crystal Bear for Best Feature-Length film in the Generation 14plus category and Australian Film Institute Awards for Best Direction, Best Supporting Actress, Best Supporting Actor, Best Film, Best Screenplay, and Best Editing.
The 7th Australian Film Festival ends today, November 14, at the Ayala Centre Cebu Cinema 4. The festival is presented by the Australian Embassy, Screen Australia, and the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade in cooperation with the Ayala Malls Cinemas.
