For APO Hiking Society, the music never stops

One of the most durable singing groups in the country is the APO Hiking Society, which is composed of Jim Paredes, Danny Javier, and Buboy Garrovillo. They have been in the music scene for 40 years, but the fans can’t seem to have enough of them. But despite their long stay in the business, they only had one major show at the Araneta Coliseum which was held last year.

Come September 25 and 26, the new concert venue named Skydome located at SM City North EDSA would bear witness to the musical artistry of Jim, Danny and Buboy as they stage “Apo Kayang Kaya Pa” produced by Viva Concerts.

We had the chance to talk to Danny at the presscon of their concert last week and he intimated that having been friends for the longest time, the APO members have yet to have a major problem among them. They do have misunderstandings at times, but they make it a point to talk about it at once so as not to let any problem go out of hand. That is one of the secrets to their staying power.

Danny, who composed “Di Na Natuto,” one of the biggest hits of Gary Valenciano, had helped many politicians in the past even if he’s not working for the government. He had extended help to personalities like Juan Flavier, Marcelo Fernan, former Philippine Sports Commission chairman Philip Ella Juico, even Winnie Monsod, and Ms. Haydee Yorac.

“I don’t receive anything from them. I do it pro bono. I only support people and advocacies that I believe in. Once I believe you are doing a good job, I won’t hesitate to give you my support. I won’t hesitate to get involved as long as I know that what you are doing benefit many people,” Danny explained.

One project that he supports is Gawad Kalinga, which provides houses to homeless Filipino folks anchored on the idea of bayanihan. “Kasi pag nakatulong ka na mabigyan ng bahay ang isang tao, binigyan mo rin siya ng dignidad,” he said.

He is supporting Sen. Noynoy Aquino who recently declared that he’s running for president next year. According to Danny, our country’s number one problem is corruption and it would be best if the person elected to the highest office in the land is not tainted with corruption.

“With Noynoy, bumalik ang pag-asa na puwede pa tayong mangarap that there is hope for our country,” said Danny.

In fact, he has thought of a slogan for Noynoy: No Drama, No Porma, Noynoy Na!

Maja Salvador was mobbed by her fans when she visited Candelaria, Quezon last week in connection with the nationwide tour of Sisters Sanitary Napkins. The star of “May Bukas Pa” was received warmly by her fans. The security personnel of Sioland Supermarket at the Quezon Town Center in Candelaria, Quezon were no match to the hundreds of screaming fans who mobbed the teen star who visited them last September 9.

Maja was in Candelaria to give away 150 pieces of Sisters school bags to high school students. She rendered a dance number before distributing the goodies together with Aileen Go, vice president of Megasoft Corp, makers of Sisters Sanitary Napkins.

Although Sioland owners Bishop & Elizabeth So and their children Kathleen, Emerson, Kharen and Eric were on hand to ensure that all the arrangements for Maja’s visit were carried out to a T, they did not anticipate the kind of fervor that the people received the young actress with.

Even while the press was interviewing Maja at a restaurant, kibitzers tarried outside, screaming out her name and taking pictures of her albeit from afar and, surely, out of focus. Even the waiters, the cashiers and baggers, and some of the security men themselves were star struck and asked for Maja’s autograph.

Maja’s Candelaria stop is part of Sisters Feminine Napkins nationwide tour which includes Baguio, Dagupan, Cavite, Pampanga, Bicol, Batangas and Laguna.

Maja is currently taping for the TV remake of ‘‘Magsimula sa Puso’’ which originally starred Hilda Koronel, Richard Gomez and Jay Ilagan in the 90s. In the forthcoming ABS-CBN series, Maja’s co-stars are Jason Abalos and Coco Martin.

In our short interview with Maja, she denied all rumors linking her to actors Sam Milby and Jon Avila.

‘‘I don’t know where such talks come from,’’ said she. ‘‘Sam and I were only recently together twice and for work: during the Star Magic World Tour and at a show in General Santos City. As for Jon Avila, no, he isn’t courting me at all.’’

‘‘No love life for me at this point. I want to focus on work.’’
