Learning from Karylle on letting go

- Rachelle Marie Gutierrez Dangin -

CEBU, Philippines – Coming from failed, high-profile relationship, Karylle comes out bold and decides to let go and “move forward.”

Through her latest album, “Time for Letting Go,” which was launched this year, Karylle has shown that after that painful journey she had undergone, she is set for another journey.

The 11 tracks in the album were clearly carefully chosen as they were able to convey the wave of emotions Karylle had felt.

Overall, the album stayed true to its theme: letting go of past love and moving on. With Karylle’s soft, melodious voice, one can feel that sting in her heart as she sings. More than just singing for the album, Karylle pours her heart out.

The album opens with a strong song “I’ll Never Get Over You Getting over Me,” which speaks very much of depression. In here, we feel Karylle bursting with sadness about her past and that she couldn’t let go and get over a “special someone.” It seems like she’s holding on to the hope that as long as the rivers flow and the stars shine, she can never let go.

As we course through the other songs, we feel Karylle reminiscing the wonderful moments they had. From time to time, she would declare how much she loved him and how much a blessing he was to her. He was then “Hulog ng Langit.”

And then anger surfaces through the songs “You’ve Made Me Stronger” and “Almost Over You.” She openly wonders like why such heartache happened and projects “defense mechanisms” of being okay even though she is not.

In her songs, we feel how she would have wanted to save the relationship, the regret that she could have at least done something, and how convinced she was before that things could have turned out okay. The “Best of Me” (a duet with Martin Nievera), “Minamahal Kita,” “Touch Me in the Morning,” and “Wala Na Ba Ang Lahat” best express these emotions.

And of course, we also see Karylle—little by little—accepting and deciding to let go. She is “Leaving Yesterday Behind” because there is already “Something New in My Life.”

The album caps with her duet with her mother, ZsaZsa Padilla. “I Live for Your Love” is like a mother-daughter encounter. Through the song, a mother sees the pain that her daughter goes through, and stands by her while offering counsel. Though Karylle might have lived for that love of her special someone, there is still another kind of love she could live for, her mother’s.

Coming up with an album, which speaks much of a heartbreaking experience, shows that one is already open about it. And it is a good thing that Karylle has done so because she was able to see a brighter path, alongside her many realizations and inspirations.

In the latter part of the album package, she has jotted notes of thanks to people who were with her always and helped her through. Further, she wrote five stages one has to go through in order to accept life’s upheavals and finally move on.

The five stages are denial, anger, depression, bargaining and acceptance. Karylle testified that she has gone through all five and thus, has finally moved on.

Quoting from her journal, “I have to let go of the beautiful future I’d imagine with my special someone. Beautiful as it was, it was just a dream we once shared. I must let go of it to make way for newer, bigger and better dreams.”

This album has not only helped Karylle, but also other broken-hearted individuals to finally let go and move forward.

After all, broken hearts can be fixed; you just need to pick up the pieces.

“Time For Letting Go,” under PolyEast Records, is now available in record bars nationwide.
