"Iisa Pa Lamang" stars' designer is Cebuana

Elegance is a question of personality, more than one’s clothing,” so goes the bold fashion statement made by Jean-Paul Gaultier. For style icon Christian Dior, “Zest is the secret to all beauty. There is no beauty that is attractive without zest.” Twenty-four year-old designer Mary Ty, for her part, also has a clear definition of what style and fashion really means. This is coupled with a sincere vision and zest for life that not many young designers have today.

Mary Ty was born to a loving family, some might say even with a silver spoon. Yet she never took things for granted because at a young age she was taught to work hard for what she wants and to share her blessings. Her mother Grace Ty always dressed Mary and older sister Judylyn so alike, from their pig tails, clothes down to their shiny shoes. They were practically twins when Mary questioned the uniformity when she was just 10 years old. From then on, she developed her own personal style. Mini skirts and stockings and a unique orange shirt with red and green sleeves. Now who can pull that outfit off but Miss Mary herself?

Her fashion icons are Alexander Mcqueen, Galliano, Zack Posen and Jean-Paul Gaultier. Mary believes that there are no boundaries or rules to fashion, although every piece is a vital part for the total look. Mary Ty understands the need of the client and understands that women have different body types. She makes sure she accentuates your curves in the most flattering way. She believes that the designer and customer have to meet halfway to create a fashion masterpiece.

Mary loves the classic style of the 50s and every design she makes is fit to wear after six in the evening. She loves vintage inspired dresses, long gowns and aesthetic quality of luxurious fabrics. Mary even creates 50’s inspired, glam swim wear. At her Very Mary shop, she also includes men’s wear, outdoor apparel by Guido Apares Jr., street wear and women’s accessories. Mary looks up to Filipino designers Cary Santiago, Furne One and Edwin Ao. All these designers have made a name for themselves here and abroad. Mary says she wants to put designers from Visayas and Mindanao on the fashion map.

Mary’s designs have brought her success here in Cebu and in Manila, not to mention, have gained her celebrity clientele. During last Urian Awards, she dressed up Cherry Pie Picache, who won Best Actress that night. She has made Cherry Pie more fab dresses for her widely-popular, ongoing soap opera “Iisa Pa Lamang” on ABS-CBN where she plays the quotable villainess, Isadora. Another “Iisa Pa Lamang” star Angelica Panganiban, who is being watched on the soap not only for her riveting character Scarlet de la Rhea and acting showdown with lead star Claudine Barretto, but also for her fashionable get-ups, loves Mary Ty’s designs as well. Aside from “Iisa Pa Lamang,” Angelica has already worn many of Mary Ty’s designs to appearances in The Buzz and ASAP.
