Richard Gutierrez: The no.1 star of GMA 7

- Ricky L. Calderon -

Since Friday, we have been watching film entries to the Cinemalaya Independent Film Festival currently being held at the Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP). Of the ten film entries, we’ve already watched three namely “Boses,” “Ang Huling Pasada,” and “Jay.”

Since we’ve only watched three, we really cannot pass judgment yet on what film is the standout and whose performances should take the acting honors. But we’d like to congratulate Baron Geisler for his performance as the gay magazine segment-producer writer for the movie “Jay” directed by Francis Xavier Pasion. So far, based on the comments of those who’ve watch some of the entries, Baron’s the performance to beat in the best actor race. And we tend to agree although we promise to catch all the film entries so we could you a more detailed picture. Besides, we are attending the awards night on Sunday, July 20.

The movie “Jay” is a drama although it has touches of comedy. You can’t help but break into laughter despite the dramatic situations. Baron, as a gay magazine segment producer, pounces on the grief about to enfold on an unsuspecting family whose eldest son (also named) was murdered. What follows is an engrossing account as Baron tries to make his story, intruding into the lives of the hapless family, showing how media could be so manipulative and scheming.

Baron is a natural in his portrayal of his role. He is not acting the role at all. He is Jay, the manipulative and persuasive media person who’d stop at nothing to get his story, to the point of asking the mother of the deceased to reenact the scene at the morgue when she first saw the lifeless body of his son. He is very good in convincing the unwilling family members to talk before the camera and certainly knows to handle a situation to get what he wants.

Baron has frontal nudity in the film and it’s the first time he did. He is also the film’s associate producer and that’s probably one reason he agreed to the scene although the director said that the scene is important.

But newbie director Francis Xavier Pasion says his debut film is not a gay film although the film’s central character is gay. They are not also making the frontal nudity scene of Baron as the film’s selling point although he agrees that when word got around that there is such a scene, there was a great demand for ticket.

But more than the nudity in the film, the director says that he’d rather the people talk about the film’s disturbing message—how media sometimes manipulate the facts of a story and how it gives its own version of the truth. Aside from Baron’s performance, the film’s message is enough reason to watch the film.

Dr. Nonoy Zuniga is the newest endorser of Power Joints, which he says helps relieve the pain caused by osteoarthritis. The food supplement is distributed by the Lucida Company, which counts among its endorsers comebacking actor Gabby Concepcion for one of its products in the market.

According to Nonoy, he had been taking Power Joints even before he was tapped to be its endorser. “I was looking for a medicine that I could take to ease the pain I feel on my leg and Power Joints surely answered that need,” says the singer-doctor in a recent interview.

“I’ve been using it for several months now and it’s very effective.

He’s a credible endorser for it since he knows the medicine’s efficacy. “While we cannot guarantee that Power Joints could prevent the onset of osteoarthritis because it comes with age, but it could delay the process and ease the pain.

When asked about his singing career, Nonoy says he’s finishing a new album which he hopes to release next month. He’s hopeful that he’d be able to find a record label to distribute the album titled “Beginnings.”
The album contains songs which became the part of Nonoy’s beginning in showbiz more than two decades ago.

“Codename: Asero,” the biggest and most expensive project of GMA 7 for Richard Gutierrez so far, premiered at the GMA 7 Telebabad block last Monday night. The show features Richard with new leading lady, Heart Evangelista, the newest Kapuso star.

There’s no doubt na si Richard is considered as the number one star of GMA 7 today. His projects are well-thought of and the network spends for it, with a staggering budget. The cast and crew of “Codename: Asero” flew to Dubai to shoot a good number of scenes so they could give something different for the viewers. GMA 7 left no stone unturned to ensure that the audience would enjoy “Codename: Asero.”
