Brownian method: The wit and humor of bisaya rap

- Gia Racal -
If it's rap you want to hear, you can get it anywhere, easy. But if you're looking for the kind of rap that's marked with true-blue Sugbuanon attitude and style, coupled with wit and humor in lyrics and married to a hip and catchy beat - you can get it from the rap duo, Brownian Method.

Composed of Rey Nacilla a.k.a. MC Rey and Edwin Colina a.k.a. Ja-Ghetto, Brownian Method has gained a reputation for writing and dishing out rap songs with lyrics and beat that aren't only groovy, but fun as well.

Except for those who aren't hip-hoppers by heart or by chance, we all know that Brownian Method made history in the Visayas and Mindanao rap music scene for being one of precursors of Bisaya reality rap. They were able to both inform and entertain at the same time create an impact on many musically inclined individuals. Most especially those who are fond of rap music, and those who gravitated to "Bisrap" (Bisaya rap).

Their songs gained popularity, beginning with "Pasikat" which claimed the airwaves when it was first aired years back. A second track "Pinasagdan sa Kusina" topped local charts, following their most popular and witty, naughty song "T-back."

Recently, the management and staff of Viva South Label under Viva Records together with Brownian Method and their manager, Cebuano independent filmmaker Jurly Maloloy-on, invited The FREEMAN and Banat News to witness a contract signing and the launching of their album entitled "Ang Pagbalik sa mga Tabi-an."

The album carries 12 tracks that include songs written in Tagalog due for release next year. Also, some of the songs in Sugbuano were written in collaboration with some of Cebu's talents. Among those local artists who contributed to the making of the album are Jomark, Erwin Lim, Julie Ann Pie, songbird Eva Santos and TV reporter Ramil Ayuman who carries within him a rockin' heart other than his tape-corder and mic.

The carrier single "Tabatsoy Pinoy" is expected to hit the airwaves again because of its catchy beat and lyrics that reflect the sentiments of the youth - especially those most enthusiastic about music.

An interview with MC Rey revealed that they have made a great leap in the music industry despite the fact that Bisrock (Bisaya rock) is conquering the music scene nowadays.

He believes that they still have the charm and the wit and the support of the people who love their music.

"Another round of exposure and people will learn that Brownian Method has new songs to share," MC Rey said.

"I am not afraid, bisan pa man og daghan na ang misulpot nga mga banda kay lahi man ang among style ug lahi man sad ang ila," he added.

The duo got overwhelmed at the attention given by the Viva people to them, and the chance to be part of the Viva family of artists.

"Happy mi nga na-a mi sa Viva karon. Glad to find people like them who believe in our talent," MC Rey added.

According to Atty. Marivic Benedicto, assistant general manager of Viva Records Corporation who represented Viva Records in the contract signing, said that their doors have always been open to discover new artists and composers, and decided that it would be better if artists and composers in VisMin are aware that there is room for them in Viva and that there's a label that they can call their very own.

Way back in 1997, MC Rey had already been singing rap songs during his high school days. MC Rey's involvement in school clubs/groups helped enhance his songwriting and singing skills. He composed most of the songs that appear in the so-called debut album on a nationwide release.

The group's primary influences are the late Tupac Shakur who sold over 73 million albums worldwide and known for being an activist and poet; Dr. Dré who helped hone the "rhyming talent" spat by controversial white rapper Marshall Bruce Mathers aka Eminem, and the pioneer in Pinoy rap, Francis M.

When asked how they have lasted this long amid unpredictable waves of music trends, MC Rey said, "The unity of the group and the mutual desire to create one task is present - a value that is a must for every performing artist, whatever their forté maybe. Somehow, despite varied music preferences, let us all continue supporting Cebuano artists."
