Horror Redefined

- Nikov Ng -
D' Anothers is your untypical horror movie as local cinema's New Prince of Comedy, Vhong Navarro, together with host-comedienne Toni Gonzaga, lead a comical cast of characters set to redefine the word "scary."

With lead star Vhong's innate ability to make people laugh courtesy of his spontaneous punch lines, the movie has all the marks of a potential blockbuster when it hits the big screen this July 27, in 100 cinemas nationwide.

Written by Raymond Lee and Adolfo Alix Jr. and directed by Bb. Joyce Bernal, the latest cinematic offering from Star Cinema tackles the scary genre with the slapstick factor ever present in it. The story revolves around Hesus Ressurrecion (Vhong), who is bullied by his peers and (un)fortunately inherits a century-old mansion worth millions. Ironically, he met an accident, which led to his death. Waking up in the mansion, little did Hesus realize that there were other souls living and thriving there, who would eventually change his ghostly life. Not only does Hesus own the place where the ghosts live, he also has the key to save everybody's life.

Aside from being a horror-comedy, the movie will also touch your heart. "May puso ang istorya. Na kahit nasa kabilang buhay na sila, tayo pa rin ang binabantayan nila even though minsan nakakalimutan na natin sila," said a teary-eyed Pokwang, who remembered her child whom she lost to an ailment, during a presscon held at Ayala Center Cebu last Saturday.

As for lead actor, Vhong Navarro, he describes his role as new and different. "This time, hindi ako yung abnoy na gaya ni Rico Suave sa Mr. Suave. Normal ako dito and I play two personalities, both dead and alive. The dead character portrays kung papano mamuhay ang isang multo, may nagdidisco, nag-liligawan at namboboso," the 28-year-old comedian said.

This is Vhong's follow-up movie after his blockbuster hits "Gagamboy," "Mr. Suave" and "Otso-Otso Pamela-Mela Wan." This is his second collaboration with Bernal who also directed him in "Mr. Suave."

Other stars in the cast include SCQ's love team Joross Gamboa and Roxanne Guinoo, Streetboys' Jhong Hilario, SCQ's Neri Naig, teen heartthrob John Prats, Qpids princess Jill Yulo, Mura, who stands tall as Jhong's sidekick, Pokwang and veteran contravida Bella Flores who displays her comical side in the film. This is also the first movie outing of Wazzup Wazzup's Archie Alemania, SCQ's Michelle Madrigal, and Joshua Deocareza, the guy seen in an anti-fungal TV ad scratching his bottom on a bench.

Aside from his regular top-rating shows "Yes Yes Show" and "My Juan and Only," Vhong also has his hands full working on his second album with its carrier single, "Don Romantiko," which is also part of D' Anothers' soundtrack, scheduled for release on the later part of July. "In real life, hindi ako yung tipong Don Romantiko. Hindi joke lang! Hindi kasi ako marunong manligaw and ayaw ko namang mangaling kung romantiko akong klase ng tao," he coyly said.

At any rate, Vhong practically has everything an actor could have wished for: a Platinum album "Totoy Bibbo" which is on its way to becoming double platinum, blockbuster movies and top-rating shows. Is there still something lacking in his life? "A wife and a business," he candidly said. Despite that, Vhong is still grateful to have his "lucky charms," who have continuously motivated him to become the person that he is now - his "kids and family."
