MANILA, Philippines — Integrated telco network PLDT Inc., through its wireless unit Smart Communications, Inc. (Smart), is driving economic growth in Southern Leyte with the rollout of new LTE sites in Saint Bernard.

This network expansion is set to enhance livelihood opportunities, particularly benefiting the province’s agriculture-driven economy.

Saint Bernard’s farmers, who primarily cultivate coconut and palay, stand to gain significantly from these technological upgrades.

“Technology is a game-changer for farmers in agriculture-based provinces like Southern Leyte,” said Debbie M. Hu, first vice president and Wireless Network Head at Smart.

“With reliable connectivity, farmers can access real-time weather updates, learn modern farming techniques, and make informed decisions. This reduces losses, boosts productivity, and improves the quality of life for farmers and their families, driving economic growth in the province,” Hu added.

“In today’s digital world, communication and connectivity are essential. This network expansion will help our association integrate technology into our farming operations, making us more efficient and competitive,” noted Danny Balasico, president of the Tambis St. Bernard Farmers Irrigators Association.

To complement the enhanced connectivity, PLDT and Smart are deploying FarmTech packages nationwide, with the Tambis St. Bernard Farmers Irrigators Association being the first recipient in Southern Leyte.

The FarmTech package is a tech-driven training kit designed to empower remote farming communities with digital literacy tools. It includes a tablet, smartphones, a SmartBropocket WiFi with prepaid load cards, an outdoor projector, a portable sound system, and learning resources.

“We are grateful to PLDT, Smart, and the Department of Agriculture - Agricultural Training Institute Region 8 for providing us with this package,” said Balasico adding that these tools, along with the improved connectivity, will enable them to train their members in utilizing digital platforms to advance farming practices.

Smart’s investment in network infrastructure and innovative solutions aligns with the PLDT Group’s commitment to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UNSDG). Specifically, it supports UNSDG No. 1 (No Poverty), No. 8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth), and No. 9 (Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure).

By equipping Southern Leyte’s farmers with the tools and connectivity they need, Smart is promoting a more sustainable and prosperous future for the province’s agricultural sector.
