CEBU, Philippines — The Cebu Transcentral Highway (TCH) in Balamban, Cebu, is more than just a road, it is a testament to history and the drive for progress.
One of Cebu’s significant transportation developments and infrastructure throughout the years, TCH stretches approximately 33 kilometers connecting Metro Cebu to the northwest towns.
Constructed in the early 1990s, this highway carves through the mountainous terrain of Cebu, making land travels much faster and easier. Initially envisioned to bolster economic activities and facilitate smoother connectivity between the bustling urban center and the northwestern towns, the highway has dramatically transformed the landscape and lifestyle of the region.
After the lockdown, the local economy and tourism has spurred. The highlands have become a sought-after destination not only for nomads but also for beverage entrepreneurs who open restaurants and cafes, drawing inspiration from the healing and breathtaking mountain views and fresh air, thereby increasing their income.
In 2021, the Department of Tourism Region VII, after acknowledging the potential of the highway, stressed the importance of sustaining the growth of business and tourism promotion of TCH by proactively working on enhancements alongside Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) 7 and the LGUs of Cebu City and Balamban.
This includes citing the aim to improve areas of proper waste disposal, traffic and safety, and tourism culture.
From a rugged path to a well-paved route and smooth railroad, its evolution mirrors Cebu's progress and commitment to modernization.
