The New WRX
Subaru’s famed model, the WRX, was totally revamped for 2022 as the company digs down to its roots to design a car that has the most advanced features and performance in the WRX’s nearly 20-year history.
The Engine
The fifth-generation rally-bred icon is still powered by a renewed turbocharged boxer engine although it now carries more displacement at 2.4 liters producing 271hp. The engine will be mated to either a 6-speed manual transmission or a newly developed automatic transmission.
The 6-speed manual transmission has been refined for improved shift quality, while the new Subaru Performance Transmission offers up to 30 percent faster upshifts and 50 percent faster downshifts. The automatic transmission incorporates adaptive shift control that can quickly respond to perform rev-matching downshifts under braking as well.
A new top-of-the-line GT trim which I hope will be available in the Philippine market, will feature a newly developed automatic transmission, the Subaru Performance Transmission, as standard. It will also feature a new set of high technology suspension with electronically controlled dampers that can tailor the dynamic performance to the driver’s preferences with Comfort, Normal, and Sport mode settings. The Drive Mode Select also offers additional options to configure steering feel, damper settings, SI-Drive settings, and more, with up to 430 different customization options.
The Styling
Subaru has described the 2022 WRX's exterior as having a bold new look, with a wide-body design, wheel arches and rear diffusers, offering an aggressive stance to mimic the improved performance it offers.
The rear is also re-designed to accommodate a rear diffuser and newly styled taillights that are designed to uniquely glow like volcanic magma.
The interior features a strikingly large screen high definition tablet-style that is mounted in the center dash.
This 11.6-inch SUBARU STARLINK Multimedia system incorporates all the entertainment features of the car, as well as on-board data and the latest generation EyeSight Driver Assist Technology.
My First Impressions
Although we can only wait until we can physically test this beast, Subaru has always been known for performance. Being an icon in the world of rallying, there will be little doubt in the performance of the WRX’s engine and the transmission.
The exterior styling though, personally, is too much. Those black wheel arches are quite misplaced as I synonymously associate this style with crossovers and SUVs. The rear diffusers look heavy and quite unmatched to the rear. These two elements seemed to have ruined what looks like a very impressive front end.
So, Subaristas, what do you think about the new 2022 Subaru WRX?
