Businesses have until December 31 to reconfigure cash registers – BIR

Carlo S. Lorenciana - The Freeman

CEBU, Philippines – The Bureau of Internal Revenue has given business establishments more time to shift to the use of non-thermal paper for official receipts.

In Revenue Regulation 14-2015 it issued recently, the BIR said businesses have until Dec. 31 to comply its mandate to use thermal paper for their cash registers and other receipt-printing machines.

The BIR, through RR 12-2015, had earlier set the order's deadline last Oct. 31.

The BIR said non-thermal paper is more appropriate to use for receipts as it preserves texts longer which, the agency said, is important for record-keeping purposes.

The agency also said that business establishments seeking extension to reconfigure their machines abroad must get the approval from the concerned regional director.

It can be remembered that BIR also issued new rules that require enterprises to place specific details on receipts such as the taxpayer identification number, business name, taxpayer's registered name and a statement saying that the receipt is valid for five years, among others. (FREEMAN)
