DTI warns public to buy fireworks with PS mark
CEBU, Philippines – Are you planning to buy fireworks and firecrackers to celebrate the impending holiday season? The Department of Trade and Industry warns the public to be wary in buying them.
“DTI strongly advises the public to look for the Philippine Standard (PS) mark when purchasing fireworks and firecrackers to be assured of the products safety when used according to instructions,” the agency said in a statement yesterday.
The said products are under mandatory certification by the agency’s Bureau of Product Standards (BPS).
Manufacturers of fireworks are required to apply for PS license before selling them, according to the BPS product certification scheme.
Manufacturers who comply with the requirements of the Philippine National Standard on fireworks (PNS 1220-2:1994) are those only issued with PS license and allowed to use the PS mark on their products.
Under Republic Act 7183, the Philippine National Police regulates the sale, manufacture and use of firecrackers and other pyrotechnic devices. The law also requires manufacturers, wholesalers and retailers to get a license before selling them and bans the sale of imported firecrackers.
DTI also advised consumers to also see the package of fireworks for proper labels.
