Technology eases job hunting

Carlo S. Lorenciana - The Freeman

CEBU, Philippines - How people find work has changed dramatically over the years because of technology. Traditionally, would-be employees directly go to companies to hunt for jobs but nowadays searching for potential employers may actually be done online.

JobStreet.com, a job site in the Philippines, said technology has made job hunting easier and cheaper as people can take advantage of making online presence work for them.

Those who are in search of jobs can actually just post their profiles on the job portal and hopefully gets hired once employers see their profile, said Yoda Buyco, the marketing director of JS Philippines.

A JobStreet study in 2013 stated that one out of two Cebuanos tend to look for jobs with established and reputable companies, saying high-paying salary is a critical factor. Another reason is the suitability of the position.

More than five million Filipinos are applicants of the job site, 300,000 of whom are Cebu-based. And more than 22,000 employer advertisers are registered with the site with 2,000 companies based in Cebu.

Buyco told The FREEMAN they make sure that all companies on the job site are legal in order to avoid scams.

“We are tapping legitimate business companies,” she said. “So, before they can post we ask for business permit, BIR, DTI permit and all those documents and forms.”

JobStreet.com recently released its Cebu Annual Salary Report and the top highest paid jobs, based on the average monthly salary compiled by the job site.
