Crawling traffic

MOTORIST’S CORNER - Nimrod NL Quiones - The Philippine Star

Vehicular traffic at the Cebu South Coastal Road in Talisay City crawls during the peak hours in the morning due to the repair work near corner Laray.

There was a solitary traffic law enforcer in the corner yesterday morning and it somehow helped. It did take about 30 minutes to go through the short stretch from corner Carmen Village to Laray.

What worsened the situation were the motorcycle drivers, who were weaving in an out of the logjam with little regard for safety obviously, because a lot of them would suddenly cut into your lane like they’re made of material that would not bleed.

One thing that we rarely see are signs informing the public of road repair work a few kilometers before we run smack into them.

Notice about most repair work is usually put right where the work is being done leaving many motorists with no other option.

Talisay has been a poor performer when it comes to traffic management and you can see that in Tabunok and in many other areas.

There is that NO LEFT TURN sign right across the exit from a mall, but many times we’ve seen drivers disregard it. Why is this so?

A reader asked us how come there are big rocks and all sorts of debris on the road where there is no repair or construction work in the area.

He noted the danger that such pose to the motorists especially those using motorcycles, who could lose their balance if they hit these debris on the road.

There is also garbage that fall off the open trucks that bring them to the dumpsite.

We really have to all do our share to make our city better.

We received email from a reader complaining about the driver of a white car, who allegedly hit a line of parked motorcycles inside an establishment along Gen. Maxilom Ave.

The reader said that the driver did not even bother to stop and check what damage was caused.

When we asked her if they reported the matter to the police, she said that they did not anymore do so.

This is not the first time we have come across incidents like this and we believe that the management of these establishments, despite their disclaimer that on the parking rules, must see to it that erring drivers would be made to answer.

We were once also a victim of a hit and run incident in the parking area of a mall, but nobody was there to tell us what happened.

It was another story when somebody backed into our vehicle at a school parking area. The drivers were quick to tell us the make of the vehicle and the plate and the school authorities were even quick to contact the erring driver.
