Road projects

MOTORIST’S CORNER - Nimrod NL Quiones -

What would have been a two-hour drive up north to the town of San Remigio last Saturday was stretched due to the road repairs being done on various sectors of a stretch of about 30 kilometers from the town of Sogod to the City of Bogo.

The good thing about it is that there are people who are assigned to aid motorists, some using crude means to signal stop or go, that made it a bit bearable.

We, however, took note the condition of the roads and have decided not to head north to San Remigio for the next few months until the road work are completed unless there is really a very important reason to go there.

San Remigio, of course, is always a destination that our family will always have on our priority list of places to go for long drives to. My father was born there and we still have many relatives in the town.

A reader is asking when the widening of the Mahiga Bridge on M. Cuenco Ave. or the Banilad Road will be completed.

There is already work done in the area, but there is no word as to the schedule when the project is expected to be completed.

The widening of this bridge is seen as one of the solutions to the terrible Banilad traffic.

Many motorists have complained about motorcycle drivers, who seem to think that since they have small vehicles, they have the right to just cut into the lanes of other vehicles without regard for road courtesy.

One reader said that she had the scare of her life when a motorcycle suddenly swerved into her lane and she almost hit the guy.

On a very regular basis we see people on board motorcycles involved in accidents. The problem is not the mode of transportation, but the way the vehicle is being operated.

Another reader asked if the contractor of the project at H. Cortes St. in Mandaue City can assign people to help guide motorists when they pass the area.

The reader said that she got stuck in the place when she had a hard time figuring out if it was already clear for her to drive through the construction area and there was no vehicle coming from the other side.

This is something that the contractor here can learn from those doing the road works up north.

You can feel that the election season is near with all the road works we are now seeing.

Sometimes we hope the elections are held more often so we can have good roads always.

We hope that these repair works would last until the next elections and not only after the polls next year.
