Flood worries

Last Tuesday’s heavy flooding that submerged many parts of Metro Cebu brought about a lot of worries about floods that would be of the same magnitude as what hit Luzon during Typhoon Ondoy the other year.

Many motorists were stranded during last week’s floods and there were also those that found their vehicles submerged right at the parking area of their home or office.

Yes, government has to take action to help prevent flooding, but we know that leaving everything to government is like giving up hope as many things just don’t get done in our lifetime.

In case of flooding, the sanest thing to do is probably stay put in one place, preferably one that is on high ground.

If you happen to be on the road, seek shelter and don’t force your way into flooded areas even if you are familiar with the terrain.

It is also important to tune in to news stations (AM) when there is bad weather, because their regular bulletins or reports can help guide you where to pass and what places to avoid.

Well, now if it rains, don’t pass through A.S. Fortuna St. in Banilad, Mandaue City since that is a known flood-prone area. 

Drive safely whether the road is wet or not.

Aside from our concern about flooding, many of our readers complain to us about the traffic situation.

One commuter said that it seems that the situation from Basak, Mandaue going to Maguikay is getting worse.

He said that he now has to leave his place in Consolacion earlier by 15 to 30 minutes to make sure he is not late for work.

There is also terrible traffic in the Talamban to Canduman area due to the work being done on H. Abellana St.

A few more readers also complained about the rerouting of north-bound traffic heading to the North Coastal Road, who are forced to take a right turn going to the Marcelo Fernan Bridge and then maneuver in that road below the bridge to make a U turn.

There is a considerable distance added to the trip and we’re waiting for word if this experiment is really working.

A reader, who wrote to us because of a column we wrote on the sports section of this paper, is asking if there is any plan to improve the condition of the road leading to Marigondon, Lapu-Lapu City in relation to next month’s Davis Cup event at Plantation Bay Resort and Spa.

We missed the press conference last week, but were told by those present that work would be done to repair the bad roads.

We hope that something would also be done about the tricycles that compound the problem. While we don’t want them to lose their source of livelihood, it is important to regulate their use on the main roads.
