Road blocks again

The CITOM has already issued instructions not to lend tents to those that are holding wakes if these are placed on the road, thus blocking the flow of traffic.

We were also told by CITOM Chairman Sylvan Jakosalem that they also sent a memo to the different barangays not to lend tents also for similar purpose. Several weeks since that memo, it seems that some have already decided not to honor it.

We noticed a structure that was set up on one lane of Sabellano St., barangay Quiot last week and there were also two tents set up on V. Sotto St. in barangay Tinago.

The move to disallow the previous practice of blocking the road for wakes is meant for the safety of the people going to the wakes and also to make sure that the flow of traffic would not be impeded.

While Filipino tradition dictates that we honor the dead, it is also important that we have a high regard for the living and this does not include the re-election bids of the officials, whose names are emblazoned on the tents.

The recent accidents involving public utility buses have once again revived calls for the drug testing of drivers.

While there is a mandatory drug test during the renewal of the driver’s license, this is done only every three years.

No less than the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA) has confirmed the talk about drivers of public utility vehicles taking drugs, which helps keep them awake while on the job.

There have been many disastrous results of such practice, but then that is only one of many reasons why accidents happen.

The condition of the vehicle has also been tagged as one of the primary reasons for accidents. Then there are also the roads and the lack of road courtesy.

A reader called up to complain about a boxing ring that was set up on one lane of Duterte St. in Banawa, barangay Guadalupe as part of a fiesta celebration.

The reader asked if there is a way to stop this practice of blocking roads during fiesta celebrations.

“Okay man nang nay kalingawan, but dili lang unta nila samokon ang kinabuhi sa uban nga walay labot,” he said.

“Ingnon ra ba dayon ta nga kausa ra bitaw ni sa usa ka tuig. Dili man na sakto ilaha. Pwede hangyoon nimo ang CITOM ani?”
