MCCI aims for continuity of advocacies

- Ehda Dagooc -

CEBU, Philippines - Instead of holding annual business month celebrations, the Mandaue Chamber of Commerce and Industry (MCCI) has taken a major step of launching a year-round movement calling on members to be pro-active in employing “change” in their respective companies.

MCCI president Eric Ng Mendoza announced this shift of focus during the formal launching of Mandaue Business Movement (MBM) last Tuesday, emphasizing on the move’s flagship program which is “Sustainable Business Revolution.”

Unlike the traditional business celebration, the Mandaue Business Movement aims for continuity in their advocacy “for change” by holding a series of events at least once in a quarter to sustain a stronger business sector.

Mendoza said the movement is calling member businesses to start a major change in their respective companies, such as; paying the right taxes, fair business practice, and strong environmental and social responsibility programs, among others.

“We noticed that in every celebration of business month, the programs or advocacy end after the celebration. We purposely shifted to a movement in order to have continuity in our advocacies,” Mendoza said.

Under the leadership of the new Board of Directors and in partnership with the Province of Cebu and the local government of Mandaue City, the MBM 2010 shall pave the way to a series of events and activities aimed to uphold and develop a sustainable economy where business takes on a leadership role in using environmentally friendly technology, practicing social responsibility, integrating human resource development and enforcing policies that promote responsible business performance while achieving growth.

Significantly, Mendoza said this move will also stimulate active participation of the private sector to any programs of the government especially the Local Government Units (LGUs) especially those that involves private sector and economic development.

The movement will also formulate its own “roadmap for change” to be presented to the participating businesses, specifically in pro-active stance in doing Corporate Social Responsible (CSR) that affects change.

Admittedly, Mendoza said this move is an uphill battle. “We do not anticipate an easy job here. That’s why we promote voluntary participation on this movement.”

The movement shall also form different committees that will be responsible for events and programs in line with the group’s advocacy.
