Mactan Rock offers water expertise to businesses, homes, LGU sectors

CEBU, Philippines - Following the call for strict compliance of Republic Act 9275, otherwise known as the “Philippine Clean Water Act of 2004”, Mactan Rock Industries Inc. (MRII) now offers its expertise on waster water technology system to commercial entities as well as to local government units.

MRII chairman Antonio Tompar said, in an interview with The Freeman yesterday, reports that said 70 percent of the country’s waste water problem comes from the commercial and residential sectors prompted the company to offer their services for these specific segments of the society.

“We are so far the only Filipino company offering Build-Own-Operate-Manage [BOOM] for corporate and residential (units) in the waste water system,” said MRII chairman Antonio Tompar in an interview yesterday.

The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) earlier reported that most of the waste water problem in the Philippines, is not contributed by the industrial sector, but rather majority are from the commercial industries like hotels, resorts, as well as the residential sector.

MRII, which has been partnering with other LGUs, such as in Puerto Princesa in Palawan, in providing waste water technology is now ready to offer BOOM and Build-To-Operate (BOT) agreement with both private and government sectors to address the problem.

Moreover, due to the lack of waste water treatment facilities offered by some water districts, Tompar said MRII was able to ink deals with private firms around the country.

In Cebu, Tompar said they were able to forge deals with residential condominium projects at Mactan Island including Filinvest’s Seascapes, Sta. Lucia’s Discovery Bay, and Robinson’s Land Corporation’s Amisa project for the installation and operation of waste water treatment facility.

On the other hand, Tompar said the company is currently finalizing its deal with the city government for the waste water treatment system at the South Road Properties (SRP) as big developers are now starting with their multi-billion-peso projects on the 300-hectare property.

“We are willing to help water districts install an effective waste water system technology. Waste water is now becoming a social problem. The R.A. 9275 should be complied with seriously,” Tompar said.

MRII recently closed a P7 million waste-water management contract with the local government of Puerto Princesa, in Palawan to help the city become a premier environment tourism spot in the country.

The four-phase waste water project in Puerto Princesa, Tompar said utilizes technology that will treat waste water from the public markets and commercial areas. The system can treat at least 1,500 cubic meters per day.

According to Tompar, Cebu which is becoming the premier hub for tourism related investments, as well as popular vacation home destination among foreigners, should start building a sound waste water treatment facility. Otherwise, the province will lose its beauty as a tourism and investment hub.
