PLDT myDSL sees potential growth from teenage market

- Ehda Dagooc -

CEBU, Philippines - The Philippine Long Distance Telephone Company digital subscriber line (PLDT myDSL) anticipates a significant growth from the teenage market as PLDT myDSL sets to roll out more value-added services in the next few months.

In an interview with PLDT myDSL product manager Myla Villanueva, she said that the teen market has significantly moved up the broadband growth of PLDT myDSL product.

The teenagers have a huge impact on the preferences of broadband products for their family and peers, said Villanueva.

Of the total 500 thousand myDSL subscribers, about 20 percent to 30 percent are teenagers. This is expected to double or triple in the next few months, as the company will introduce more products and services geared towards attracting the teenage market segment.

Highlighting the latest value-added product introduced recently by PLDT myDSL, the WatchPad, the company expects to drum up interest from the huge residential market, making teen-agers as the “decision makers” in this particular product.

Recently, the PLDT myDSL WatchPad officially launched its groundbreaking partnership with local cable channel Real Cebu Television (RCTV) creating the “Live and Loud” event celebrating Cebu talent, local culture, technological convergence and the new age of cable and internet television.

With this union of forces, WatchPad now brings the Cebu flavor to the rest of the Philippines with the addition of RCTV to its growing list of channels.

RCTV, which airs locally on Channel 36 on Sky Cable and now nationwide through WatchPad, is Cebu’s only infotainment channel that features everything about Cebu—lifestyle, culture, music, people and places.

WatchPad, is on Beta format and its full service is available for free to all PLDT myDSL subscribers. At present, there are already over three thousand subscribers who are enjoying this latest multimedia application aimed at merging Web television with several other interactive services.

The best feature of the new service is the buffer-time free video streaming which does not require a lot of memory space from personal computers or desktops, unlike in conventional video-sharing sites.

Existing subscribers will only have to register online to gain access into the new PLDT application and watch the initial eight channels available free. More channels and applications will soon come into the program as testing and enhancements continue.

Developed by a Malaysian firm, the browser-based application combines television channels, a move-on-demand service, a chat room and other Web-based operations/applications.

Today, myDSL subscribers can watch TV programs on computer, free of charge, with 18 channels to choose from these are;CNN, National Geographic Channel, E!, PBO, Channel V, CNBC, Cartoon Network, Animax, History, The Biography Channel, Crime and Investigation, Living Asia, RCTV, Go, Splash, Smart Shopping, TBN-Word, and myView.
