Bad roads

MOTORIST’S CORNER - Nimrod NL Quiñones -

When you drive around Cebu these days, no matter how good your vehicle’s suspension is, you will really feel the need to do a lot of road repair.

Yes, our roads badly need a new layer of asphalt while some need a major repair. While we know the rains bring about such conditions of the roads, let us also remember that the government’s constant “lack of budget’ is also to blame.

We know that roads can be repaired fast if government pours money like when Cebu hosted the ASEAN Summit. Unfortunately there was just too much money also then that some corrupt officials overpriced the decorative lampposts.

Just make sure you don’t drive too fast these days on streets that you are not familiar with. This means streets where you don’t know where the potholes are.

One reader asked if the city government is going to do an ‘Asphalt Storm,’ which it did many years ago to repair our roads.

We really have no idea.

We received a call from a reader, who requested anonymity about the Motor Vehicle Inspection that is conducted by the Land Transportation Office.

She asked if the inspections are really done properly because she noticed that some vehicles were inspected at the back of the building and not in front, which is the practice in the past.

We have long raised questions about the inspections done because we notice that many vehicles with so many defects are still on the road and with new registration stickers.

What is the use of inspections if it can’t be done right? Is this another source of corruption?

We’d like to believe that there are more honest people at the LTO than crooks and we hope that these honest people would help find ways to stop the crooks.

Another reader called us up to say that he also is very unhappy with the way things are going in the licensing center at a mall.

He said, “maypa didto na lang ko sa main office sa LTO.”

There are those who say that it is easier to renew the license in Mandaue. We wonder what this really means.

The problem with our country is that it seems many systems are put in place to encourage corruption.

Since it is so hard to do some things, people are forced to pay people to make it easier for them.
