Flooding

MOTORIST’S CORNER - Nimrod NL Quiñones -

The rains have once again brought the floods back to our streets, but then the good thing about such floods is that they subside quite fast.

We don’t have the best drainage system in our city, but at least we don’t have to deal with flooding even days after the rain as in the case of some places.

This does not however mean we can be complacent. We can do our share to prevent flooding by making sure we don’t throw our trash just anywhere since they clog up the drainage.

We see so many people throw a plastic bag or a plastic cup out of the car. These morons may not realize it, but these small pieces of trash can add up to a major problem if not stopped.

Before you throw out anything outside of your car window, think if you’d like to wade through flood waters the next time you pass the place.

We received email from Raoul Vecina, who is now based in Canada.

Here it is:

Hi nimrod!

I just finished reading you’re The Freeman column online. With regards to my former CIT engineering classmate Bingen Mendezona’s email let me follow up by asking: Are there people from any government agency tasked to REGULARLY monitor and inspect public transportation vehicles, and commercial vehicles? There’s only a few  times in my years living in Cebu that i observed any on-road inspections, unlike here in Canada you’ll see them anywhere......Thanks, Raoul Vecina (Air Canada, Vancouver)

Thanks for the email.

There is the MVIS of LTO that has to check vehicles if they are road worthy before the registration of such can be renewed.

We went through this process last January and made sure that we won’t have any problem by asking the service department of the dealer of the vehicle to do a thorough check first.

What is disappointing is when you see vehicles obviously lacking the necessary lights and other safety devices running on the streets and you see that they have new LTO stickers, which means they were just registered.

The road in Canduman, Mandaue City is in a very sad state. Last school break, there was work done on it, but it seems to take so long to finish and with the start of the school year, we received so many complaints from readers, who are also parents of student at Sacred Heart School-Jesuit.

One reader told us that she has to leave her place, which is actually just less than a kilometer away to be able to bring her kids to school on time.

The problem points here are not only just the bad roads, but also the lack of discipline of many drivers, including those of private cars, who disregard traffic signs.

More traffic enforcers can help ease the problem.

We also received a complaint about jeepneys that stop near the entrance of Paradise Village, which hasn’t been checked by the enforcers in the area.

The reader is asking to whom she shall address her complaint as a city councilor she approached seemed unable to do anything.
