Congested Tojong

MOTORIST’S CORNER - Nimrod NL Quiones -

Last week, we received another complaint about the vehicles, mostly jeepneys, parked along Tojong Street that affects the flow of traffic in the area.

The female caller told us that vehicles passing Tojong have a hard time negotiating the narrow street since there are many vehicles that are parked there.

She said that the reason why jeepney drivers hang out in the area are the food stalls that are situated there.

There are many vehicles that pass Tojong to avoid the congestion at corner Arch Reyes and Gorordo Ave. if they are heading to the Lahug area.

We passed the area yesterday and although it was already past lunchtime, there were still many jeepneys that were parked on both sides of the street. We did not see any traffic signs, but we’re sure CITOM can do something about this if they really bother to check.

The reader told us that she often passes the street on her way to the Social Security System office.

We hope the CITOM will do something and not just select the areas where they would implement traffic laws.

The South Coastal Road has provided many opportunities for the owners of properties that have been given access to a major road that has increased property prices so many times over.

Now, many lot owners are developing their properties, but the issue here is not development, but the neglect of some people dumping soil on the properties that are very negligent.

Last week, we saw lots of mud on the road, but at least whoever was at fault took time to clean up the mess.

What worries many motorists is that the mud if left on the highway poses a major safety concern.

Also, if those dumping soil would be very careless and would not clean up the mess immediately, the mud can speed up the depreciation of the road and we’ll soon have lots of potholes there.

We all have to do our share of taking care of the infrastructure provided to us by government.

Several readers have complained to us about the children, who are on the streets to sing carols and beg from motorists.

This is not something new and unfortunately, our government has not done anything, which is also not something new.

There is however a common complaint, motorists want to share, but they don’t want to share to the children on the streets, because it is like condoning their deed, which puts their life in danger.

Shall the authorities go after the parents?

That question will have to be answered by the agencies, who have disregarded their duties.

What if a motorist would accidentally hit a small kid? This motorist will have a major headache.

Government should rid our streets of these children. They are violating the law against mendicancy and this is not a good sight for the tourists, who we are luring to our country.
