UP, FEU lady spikers off to flying start in UAAP volleyball
MANILA, Philippines — University of the Philippines needed the full, five-set route to overcome a short-handed University of the East, 25-18, 26-24, 24-26, 13-25, 15-13, yesterday that set in motion its campaign in UAAP Season 87 women’s volleyball at the MOA Arena.
Joan Marie Monares paced her team with 17 points including 16 off kills while Kianne Louise Olango, Irah Anika Jaboneta and Nina Ytang chipped in 15, 12 and 11 hits, respectively, to power the Fighting Maroons to their first win.
In the nightcap, Far Eastern U trounced University of Santo Tomas, 25-19, 16-25, 25-14, 25-20, to seize an early share of the lead.
Although the state-owned school nearly blew it, it was still a win that gave it much hope this season after a forgettable campaign last year when it wound up eighth and dead last with just a win to show in 14 outings.
For the Lady Warriors, they showed that they still can compete despite losing the talented Casiey Dongallo, who transferred to UP.
In the men’s side, UP likewise went through the ringer after squeezing past UE, 19-25, 25-23, 24-26, 25-16, 18-16.
