MANILA, Philippines —   And the windfall of rewards continues for golden boy Carlos Yulo along with the rest of the Filipino Olympians.

The International Container Terminal Services, Inc. (ICTSI), one of the country’s staunch sports advocates, yesterday awarded a P10 million incentive to Yulo to add to his growing treasure chest in the aftermath of his Paris Olympics glory.

Aside from Yulo, winner of two Olympic gold medals in the men’s artistic gymnastics, bronze winners Aira Villegas and Nesthy Petecio of boxing received P2 million each. The non-medalists also received P200,000 each.

“It’s difficult to have that weight on your shoulders. You are all (an) inspiration to many,” said ICTSI executive vice president Christian Gonzales, who represented top honcho Enrique Razon Jr. in the rites at the Solaire Resort.

POC president Abraham “Bambol” Tolentino paid gratitude to the untiring backers of Philippine sports during the awarding.

“Ito po ‘yung ating karangalan na binigay sa bansa,” said Tolentino.

“Sobrang nagpapasalamat po kami. Sana po magpatuloy ang ganitong kalakas na suporta, hindi lang para sa akin at sa aming Olympians ngayon sa Paris, kundi sa mga susunod na atleta sa lahat ng international levels tulad ng world championships at Olympics,” said Yulo.

Meanwhile, President Marcos honored members of the Philippine contingent to the Paris Paralympic Games and awarded each of them with a P1 million cash incentive.

Six Paralympians were present during the meet and greet with Marcos at Malacañang last Thursday – swimmers Ernie Gawilan and Angel Otom, athletics’ Cendy Asusano and Jerrold Mangliwan, archer Agustina Bantiloc and taekwondo jin Allain Ganapin. The athletes were also presented with a presidential citation.

Among those who accompanied Marcos during the event were First Lady Liza Marcos, their sons Vincent and Simon, Executive Secretary Lucas Bersamin and Philippine Paralympic Committee President Michael Barredo.

Marcos also met with swimmer Akiko Thomson-Guevara, who was bestowed the “Olympian for Life” recognition last July. –  Alexis Romero
