UP Diliman probing another frat incident

The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines - The University of the Philippines (UP) Diliman on Thursday released a statement regarding an incident involving another fraternity, just days after a student from the De La Salle University- College of St. Benilde died from apparent hazing.

"The Diliman administration is in touch with the family. They want justice but also want to keep their privacy. We respect their decision and therefore cannot give details about the case as we continue with our investigation," UP Diliman Chancellor Dr. Michael Tan said in a statement posted on the UP Diliman Facebook page.

Philstar.com is awaiting reply from the UP administration regarding the context of the statement.

On Wednesday, UP Diliman alumna and Rock Ed Philippines founder Therese 'Gang' Capati posted on microblogging site Twitter about a fraternity-related incident.

"Someone from St Luke's msgd that there was a near death admitted recently from a prominent UP frat - naturally hushed by those around him," her tweet read.

On her Facebook page, Capati posted the following message:

"There's a neophyte from a prominent UP Diliman frat who was in critical (near-death) state very recently - now recovering at home from St Luke's hospital. Naturally this story was hushed by those around him- whether sadya or not, but very few have heard of it. (Omerta, I suppose.) I imagine this story will come out soon in the light of the College of St Benilde frat hazing death. So when this UP frat neophyte recovers, I assume he will be a frat man, a brother. I wonder if he will wear this brush with death like a badge of honor. What kind of initiation master will he be when the next batch of neophytes come in? Will he be kinder because of what he went through? Will he be tougher for the same reason? I heard frats give "those who resign" a very tough time, maybe because they know too much to (now) be an outsider. I'm still trying to understand things. I have been since the late 80s, or since I saw Mike de Leon's Batch 81. Misteryo talaga 'to sa 'kin."
