Romeo Marantal - The Freeman

CEBU, Philippines — A man who was incarcerated two years ago for murder died instantly, while his wife got injured, after they were shot by an unknown assailant in Sitio Lawis, Barangay Maghaway, Talisay City at around 6:30 p.m. last Saturday.

The victims were identified as Robert and Lucet Castañares, from Barangay Lagtang, Talisay City.

Talisay Police Station chief, Lt. Col. Randy Caballes, said the couple were riding a motorcycle to Barangay Tapul to visit their family.

But when they arrived in Barangay Maghaway, they were ambushed by an unknown assailant who was also riding a motorcycle.

Robert suffered gunshot wounds in the chest which caused his instantaneous death, while his wife suffered a gunshot wound in her left shoulder.

When the members of the Talisay Rescue Emergency Assistance Team (TREAT) responded to the alarm, Robert no longer had signs of life, while they immediately brought the wife to the Cebu South Medical Center.

Caballes said that Robert was reportedly imprisoned for murder in 2021 but was released in December 2022.

Personnel of the Scene of the Crime Operation (SOCO) recovered four empty shells of caliber .45 pistol.

The investigating team is looking at personal grudge as the possible motive in the shooting.

The police are also looking for other pieces of evidence that can help them in the identification of the suspects. —/GAN (FREEMAN)
