Have you seen a mobile couch potato?

What would they do without TV?

Although there are many things in this world that can be done minus the TV — not many people know what they are anymore. Matter of fact, I was called “weird” very recently because I admitted to a few friends that I don’t watch TV.

Really.

And then, “the what about the cellphones that come with a TV” discussion began.

Yup. I got an earful about just how good the mobile TV phones are.

“It’s a good way to spend time at the mall,” said one of my guy friends. “When my wife goes shopping I would rather sit in the mall and watch my mobile TV.”

“What about if I wanted to catch my fave cable TV show?” asked another friend. “I would never have to miss an episode.”

“I am a TV addict, and any place and anyway, I can get my TV fix,” said the third friend.

OK, OK. Just for them I got hold of the Nokia N77, and did what they asked me to, I watched TV. And then some more.

There are two Nokia cellphones which have mobile TV as their main selling point. One is the Nokia N92, and the other, the Nokia N77.

When Nokia launched the N77 in Barcelona, Spain, it called the phone another multimedia computer, but with a twist. The N77 offers an optimized mobile TV experience in a compelling and compact form factor with complete Nokia Nseries functionalities.

What the N77 does is that it allows the TV-watching people to get that living room TV experience. But what is better is that the mobile TV is available in a small and beautifully designed package to take on the go.

“TV is the biggest media in the world and we are mobilizing it with the Nokia N77. The pocketable and affordable Nokia N77 further drives broadcast mobile TV based on DVB-H technology toward the mainstream market phase. The ability to watch live television on a mobile device has never been so easy,” said Jonas Geust, head of Nokia Nseries Players Category, Multimedia. “The wide 2.4-inch flat screen with up to 16 million colors and high quality stereo sound makes it the ideal personal mobile device for enjoying live TV and music on the move.”

I was surprised to discover that it was quite easy to download the package that allowed me to get my daily dose of TV — that was all I could really take anyway. A day’s dose.

The reception was clear, the sound was perfect and switching channels was easy. Yup, I tried watching TV on the N77 inside my room, outside the house, in the mall and yes, even in the car. TV viewing all clear.

The dedicated TV key on the Nokia N77 gives easy access to any TV channel. It even remembered the last channel I was viewing when I switched off the TV. Ahh, there is even a reminder program that beeps to let me know that a show is on. Through the Program Guide in the mobile TV application I was able to see the program information up to seven days, browse TV channels, purchase new channels if desired, and select the TV program I’m interested in.

‘Nuff said about TV watching.

The Nokia N77 is also capable of doing all the other neat stuff that the Nokia Nseries phones have become known for.

With up to 2GB of memory and integrated stereo speakers, the Nokia N77 also features great mobile music experiences. Enjoy your favorite DJs or discover a rich new world of music with Visual Radio. With support for MP3, AAC, AAC+, eAAC+ and WMA, no song should go unheard. For enhanced personal sound quality, simply connect the in-box earphone buds or use the Nokia Audio Adapter with standard 3.5-mm connector to hook up to a compatible headphone.

There are pictures that can be shot with the two-megapixel camera. Beneath its good-looking exterior, the Nokia N77 is designed to work on 3G (WCDMA 2100 MHz), EDGE and GSM (900/1800/1900 MHz) networks.

I must admit that I did enjoy the Nokia N77. Except that I noticed the large font function is not an option. But you can’t have everything in one package.

The Nokia N77 is another winner from Nokia especially if you are among those who can’t last a day without watching that idiot box.

Yes, my three friends and I still think that the TV is an idiot box. Yes, I would watch it if it were an assignment.

And, OK, mobile TV is good for people on the move — those who have to stand still or sit quietly, that is.
