EDITORIAL — An olive branch?

Amid threats to impeach Vice President Sara Duterte Carpio, President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. said he asked the House to stop any such move against her.

“That’s really my opinion, this is not important. This does not make any difference even in one single Filipino life, so why waste time with it?” a Philstar.com report quotes Marcos as saying in an ambush interview in Quezon Province.

He said it will just be a waste of time.

“It will tie down the House, it will tie down the Senate. It will just take up all their time and for what? For nothing, for nothing. None of this will help improve a single Filipino life. As far as I am concerned, it’s a storm in a teacup,” he said.

When asked if he considers his relationship with Carpio beyond repair. He said “never say never.”

Is this some form of olive branch? We can’t be blamed for thinking it isn’t. In the world of politics, just like diplomacy, some things don’t have to be obviously said in a press conference. He even hints he may be open to mending fences between them.

The ball is now in the court of Carpio; let’s see where this goes. And we do hope this goes somewhere positive because, frankly, the drama between these two doesn’t just seem like a telenovela anymore, but a telenovela that has been rerun, rewritten, and rebooted too many times already.

But then again we don’t really know if the lawmakers will heed what he asks. After all, they are beholden to the Constitution first, as they should be as lawmakers. Because when you think about it, all this stemmed from a legitimate need to look into how government funds --paid for by the hard-earned money of taxpayers-- were spent.
