Government sees potential in new AWS offering

MANILA, Philippines — The Department of Information and Communications Technology was bullish on Amazon Web Services’ latest offering, Local Zones, in boosting the country’s profile as a regional IT hub. 

AWS launched Local Zones in Manila, a service that would reduce latency for its customers. The offering would enable AWS clients to easily deploy applications closer to their end-users, since having “Local Zones” close to dense populations can speed up online gaming, live streaming, among others. 

“The launch of the AWS Local Zones location in Manila is a testament to the growing reputation of the Philippines as a premier regional IT hub," Ivan John Uy, DICT secretary in a statement.

The Marcos Jr. administration is pushing a digital transformation to take shape within the national government and the domestic economy. 

Besides that, the Philippines is considered worldwide as a hotspot for outsourcing services. 

These Local Zones situated in Manila is AWS’ newest addition to its infrastructure in the country. Their previous products rollouts include Amazon CloudFront, a content delivery network service. 

AWS clients include Jollibee Foods Corp., BDO, UnionBank of the Philippines, GCash, and Maya, among others.
