PLDT’s Manny Pangilinan tests Smart’s 5G network
MANILA, Philippines — PLDT Chairman and CEO Manny Pangilinan himself has recently put to test Smart’s 5G network using his new 5G phone.
PLDT and Smart fired up the country’s first 5G cell sites and launched the first Smart 5G cities last year. PLDT said Smart has been testing 5G since 2016, when it achieved speeds of 2.5 gigabits per second using 100 MHz with latency of one millisecond over a “live” network.

PLDT has been working with technology partners Huawei, Ericsson and Nokia in piloting 5G use cases and solutions.
The telco giant is looking to sign more pilot deals with technology partners this year as part of its 5G efforts, with the company announcing last month a partnership with global technology company Cisco to help transform its IP transport infrastructure into a fully automated software defined 5G-ready IP transport network.
As of February this year, PLDT said its total fiber footprint was at 255,000 kilometers all over the country, making it the most extensive in the Philippines at present.
